Go ahead and laugh & tell me haw stupid I am. I am considering making a .25 ACP rifle. would I gain anything over a .22lr besides bullet diameter. I would think I could make a more accurate rifle than your average .22, if, for no other reason than case and bullet uniformity. If I did attempt this, how would you go about it? i'm thinking take a single shot .22 and modify the bolt head. maybe a handi-rifle? Let the laughter begin.
 
The .25ACP is a centerfire cartridge, and I think converting a rifle from rimfire would be quite the challenge, even for a master machinist.

On the other hand, you could get a Handi-Rifle in .22 Hornet. This is an established caliber (though somewhat rare) with quite a bit of reloading data.

It fills the gap between the .22LR and the .223 Remington (IMO). However, even though I know about these gap-fillers, I don't own one. I go from .22LR to .243 Winchester... :)
 
If someone made a Marlin 60 in .25ACP I'd buy one. I think you could convert a Handi Rifle though. Get a .22lr barrel and have it bored out to .25 and chambered. Then put it on a centerfire frame. I bet it wouldn't make any noise at all.
 
I've thought about it myself, but I would go with a T/C Encore

After paying in either a lot of money or a lot of effort, you'll have a rifle which can safely fire a lower performing cartridge which costs 10x more, but in America, one is absolutely free to do this. :)

I highly doubt you can make a more accurate rifle with a .25ACP than you could obtain with a premium quality (Kimber, Cooper, Anschutz, Weatherby) .22LR. I also highly doubt that you can obtain components to reload this cartridge that will display as much uniformity as good quality .22LR match ammo like Eley, Lapua, RWS, or even CCI Green Tag. Your proposition is an excellent way to waste money on a rifle and ammo to achieve sub-par results.

Depending on his local laws it may give him a hunting rifle that isn't over powered for the intended game. (rimfire aint legal for everything everywhere)
 
Just throwing it out there to garner the laughs and abuse. Don't really have the money to even think about it and wanted to hear the reasons it wouldn't work. I heard all the ones I expected plus a couple I didn't.
 
Finding a barrel blank will probably be impossible - all .25 cal rifle barrels are for .257 diameter bullets, while the .25 ACP bullets are .251 in diameter.

Where would you find a .25 ACP chambering reamer?

And so on, and so on, and so on.

okay, Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha..... well enough of that. it is possible, but i agree with other posts that you will get performance below what you are expecting for a lot more money than is neccessary. if you were just wanting a similar rifle, the .22 hornet(and k-hornet), .221 rem fireball, and even the FN 5.7x28. gives similar performance to the hornet.
 
I think it's a fantastic idea and I'd love to have one myself, particularly one with a very long barrel and a fast twist. With something like that you could work up some nearly silent handloads that would still hit nearly as hard as a rimfire.
