I've never fired a shotgun slug in my life. Can they be shot out of a smooth bore barrel? I'm guessing they'd function okay, but I'd bet accuracy would really suffer. Is a rifled barrel necessary for effective slug shooting?

Short answer would be to shoot rifled slugs out of a smoothbore and save the Sabots (non-rifled slugs) for rifled barrels. You can shoot Sabots out of a smoothbore, but due to lack of spin (unless barrel is equipped with a rifled choke) they are not the optimal choice in this case. Either way, rifled slugs out of the smoothbore shotty should be accurate out to roughly 100 yards..give or take.

Yes, they can be shot out of a smoothbore barrel. Non-sabot-type slugs were originally designed to be shot out of smoothbore barrels, IIRC. You can shoot them out of rifled barrels if you like.

I like shooting slugs, myself. They make a lovely squishing sound. :D

Im not too familiar with this area as I own a "true" smoothbore shotgun which does not accept chokes of any kind.

So do I, but I can change out the barrels quite easily with my Mossberg 500. It originally had a 28" barrel, but I put an 18.5 inch one on it to make it easier to handle indoors for a self-defense scenario.

Thread tangent...

I'd read several times around here about us guys that like the ole 870 for HD and many recommend loading a slug or two in the mix with the 00 buck shells.

What kind of slugs do those of you prefer for this setup??
Rifled slug? Sabot-slug? Does it matter at this range?

Still be interested in what you like for this purpose.

I once had a old beater Iver Johnson 12 ga, a top break single shot, that liked these...

These don't make a "Squishing sound", they make a really loud WANG instead.

Probably because the target was a steel plate no one could see, including me, but since i put it where I did I could still hit it.

That took some learning, but once I did hit it I could repeat it untill eith I could take the recoil, or the ammo ran out. Most of the time the ammo ran out.

Squishing sound huh? 1 K :D

My nef shoots regular foster (rifled type) slugs fine, and very accuratly. My brother hit a steel drum from 200yd with just a bead sight kneeling. Only once though:D

I keep a mix of 2 3/4" express 00 buck and 2 3/4"
1 oz. rifled slugs in mine FWIW. when I get around to buying some brenneke slugs I'll probably use those.
