Hello Folks,
I am seriously considering coating my remington 870 with duracoat. It is a new model and the finish is "okay" but nothing more. I'm constantly wiping it down with an oily rag whenever I handle it becuase if I don't there are some smears on it from the oil from my hands.

Anyhow, I would also like a more durable finish so when I take it hunting and I smack it against a tree truck, drag it through a thorn bush, trip and shove it into a woodchipper, etc, (I'm pretty clumsy I guess), it wont get scratched through the finish.

My question is: will duracoat fix this and how hard is it to apply duracoat? Do I need to sand off the current finish and go from there?

Thanks, and take care.

I'm not sure duracoat is the answer here. Sure, it's immune to corrosion. But if you're going to be banging around I think it's going to chip off here and there. At least that's what I've read. That's why conversion coatings like bluing and park are so great - they're tough as steel.

Application seems to be easy enough, but you need a paint sprayer. I think you need to sandblast everything too.

Ok folks, thanks for the replies. For now I'll just leave it and wait for some more money and time to get it refinished.

Happy shooting

When you do decide to refinish it, have it professionally Parkerized. I have a hunting buddy who has an old Remington 870 Special Purpose with a Parkerized finish, and I believe it was bought that way from the factory back when, it has held up very well through many duck hunts and soakings.
