I have an old 870 that needs to be refinished. I don't want to spend the money to have it blued or parkerized. I know there are spray and bake finishes available. Does anyone here have any suggestions for something durable (I had one person tell me to spray paint it with Krylon paint - not what I was looking for) that I can do at home? Thanks.

Check out Brownells Gun Parts online. They sell a product called Aluma Hyde II ( I think that's what it's called) that's suppose to be extremely durable colored coating for guns. It should be way more durable than hardware store paints. All the reviews I've read about it are positive. I check it out for a project, but just haven't gotten around to trying it. Hope this helps.

I use Dura-Coat for almost all of my finishes, I would highly recomend that, and you dont have to bake it.

-1 for Alumahyde. It scrapes off really easy. Maybe I screwed up somehow but I was really careful about degreasing and painted many thin coats, and after a week of curing I could scrape it off with a fingernail.

Isn't home bluing/parkerizing rather cheap? Dura-Coat isn't especially cheap unless you're already set up for spray finishing.

take the shoulder stock off the reciver and buy the parkerized spray paint that you can bake in the oven, it will wont scratch as much as using regular spray paint.

i bought my 870 2 weeks ago and it has a rough finish on the reciever and barrel , i banged it around in the bushes and bumped into small trees and it barely has any scratches. i am wondering what type of bake method is used on the new 870 express shotguns?

Curious if anyone has tried BlueWonder, the video is convincing and the price is appealing, no baking required.

PA4476's previous thread is about DUPLI-COLOR* Truck Bed Coating. After hunting season this year I'll need to refinish mine also. Winter project...

It's bead blasted and blued, not a spray on finish. Some of the tactical models may come with a parkerized finish. Also the marine models have a nickel finish.

Gun-Kote is an awesome finish. That is what I would do. Way more durable than Duracoat.

I used Gun-Kote and had pretty bad results. I used it on an old enfeild, I did everything right, and the stuff comes right off. I banged the barrel on a glass coffee table, and that made a 1/4 scratch down to bare metal!

Did you use it in the spray can or did you use an air brush, etc?

I've used it on AR15's, pistol slides, magazines, etc...

I used the spray can. This was before I bought a spray-gun. But how would that affect the final finish? I know it sprays for s### when you use the can.

I've never used the spray can but I have heard a lot of bad stories associated with it. Not sure how it affects the final finish, but I am seeing a pattern with that method...
