Duracoat... I kind of like it.

So I started a couple months ago doing one of my rifles because I wanted to make it two toned and did not want to pay my local guy 150+ and wait 6-8 weeks. I have done a few since then and I really enjoy doing them, plus I love making them different colors. I have been using the shake and spray with 4 coats and I use a heat gun to flash dry them and give it more of a matte finish, also I think the heat adds to the cure time and durability. Well here are some pics:

As for the durability I have high expectations. Most of the stuff I did are not moving parts so wear should be minimal. Except for the Sig 1911-22, I am curious how long the slides finish will hold up. The factory FDE was already starting to wear, although that is after a few thousand rounds....

Just don't ever use anything aggressive for cleaning (like carb cleaner). I have a really cool and rugged looking AKS-74 that achieved its super-brutal hard-core appearance .... after all my Duracoat sloughed off. :eek: :uhoh:
 
I like the Sig, especially. I've saved several handguns (3) that were pitted and really dinged up. Dura Coat made them look very presentable.
 
Speaking of cleaning, I have an STI Escort which is factory "cerekoted"....not sure if this
is like dura coat....and was unsure what cleaner to use. Emailed factory in TX and they replied i could use brake cleaner. However, I picked up a spray can of electronic cleaner made by CRC and used that on the STI and a couple of my Kahrs and it did a great job of cutting the excess oil/crud from under and within the slides and plastic frames. Dried almost instantly. So far, I haven't used any brake cleaner on these guns.
 
It's been my experience that filly cured Duracoat is resistant to any normal cleaner on the shop. I feel sure soaking in brake cleaner or acetone would damage it but limited contact doesn't seem to hurt.
