I carried a Glock 22 for the last year and a half before I retired, and probably put around 3,000 rounds through it. Now that I'm retired and can carry whatever I want, I only carry XD's. I have them in 9x19, 357 Sig, .40 S&W and .45 acp.

For me, the XD points better, shoots more accurately and is reliable. The XD format is the only one that will allow me to close my eyes, bring the handgun up and point towards the target, and when I open my eyes, it will be aligned with the target. The ergonomics are supurb, at least for me.

I could just never get comfortable with the Glock, even though I could shoot it well. I was rangemaster for our department for over two years, and we had over 600 sworn personnel, so I'm familiar with handguns. For me, the XD has just about everything I want in a defensive handgun.

Hope this helps.

Fred, did find that the XD40s grip was a bit smaller than the Glock 22? Also what about recoil, is there much of a difference?

I'm not going to vote, as I've never fired either of these specific pistols. I just bought an XD 40 (5") on Sunday, and haven't yet got to shoot it. It's been years since I have shot a Glock. I didn't like the Glock (a 26) because of the short grip, so that's not a good comparison. I've been looking pretty hard at the 22 & the XD 40 myself, and did handle an RTF22. I found the sharpness of the frame to be quite uncomfortable. I really wound up going with the XD because I got a whale of a deal on it. There is merit to the availability of holsters and magazines for the Glock. And if there's one of these in significantly more holsters walking around your department, you might want to follow the trend for various reasons.

phantomak47,

The XD just fits my hand like a well made glove. The Glock 22 never felt comfortable to me. I'm 6'1" and 220 pounds, so I've got fairly large hands. For me, recoil in any .40 handgun has never been a problem. It's not much more than a 9mm, which I consider pretty much a pussy cat of a caliber. The Glock just didn't point right for me, and I had to make an effort to align the sights. That's not the case with any of my XD's, which are 6 in number.

Hope this helps.

Actually it has several internal safeties. If you're talking about a thumb type safety, thats not really needed with proper training. No more likely to ND than with a Sig or a DA revolver. As far as weapon retention, thats what a good holster is for. You try and take my pistol out of my holster you're gonna have a hard time if you dont know how, especially with me punching, kicking, stabbing and biting you.
Please explain the "several internal safeties" to me please.

I'm not getting them.

Luke

I vote XD, simply because the Glock lacks a safety (I do NOT consider the Glock's trigger mechanism to be a safety, nor should anyone else). At least the XD's grip safety adds some modicum of protection.

I voted for the Glock. I did a quick read of the posts in this thread and may have missed one point, although I don't recall seeing it anywhere. Something to think about... I carry an XD9 Service on duty and something alot of folks fail to consider (like me) There are precious few (read I found 2) duty holsters for the XD and virtually every maker has every model for the 22. If I had it to do over I woulda got a glock 17.
We can only carry 9mm per state statute.
