I came across the following on another forum. I checked snopes and there isn't anything there so this should be legit. I don't usually put stuff here from other forums but I thought that this was important enough to do so.

I did a search here and couldn't find anything so I'm creating this thread. If this is in the wrong place or if I shouldn't be posting this on THR please move or delete as necessary.

USMC Colonel Requests Positive Emails for his Marines.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

US Marine Colonel Simcock, the commander of USMC Regimental Combat Team (RCT) 6 in Iraq, is asking for 6,000 positive emails to his Marines. That's one email for each Marine in his RCT command. COL Simcock is concerned about the effect of the negative barrage that those Marines are getting through the electronic media. So far, they've only mustered 2,000 emails. That's a crying shame compared to the amount of crap I get daily in email. This is a legitimate request. It's not one of the "little Johnny wants to break the world's record in Christmas cards" situations. It takes only 30 seconds of your time. Here's the email address:

[email protected]

If you're reading this email, then you can probably click on the address, type a few words, and then hit "send" to be all done. It doesn't have to be the Gettysburg Address. Something as simple as "Hello, Marine. We thank you for what you're doing. You are in a noble task. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Best wishes & get home soon" is more than sufficient.

An excerpt from an interview with the Colonel:

GRIM: Is there anything that you and your Marines need that we could send you?

COL. SIMCOCK: (Chuckles.) I'll tell you what, the one thing that all Marines want to know about -- and that includes me and everyone within Regimental Combat Team 6 -- we want to know that the American public are behind us. We believe that the actions that we're taking over here are very, very important to America. We're fighting a group of people that, if they could, would take away the freedoms that America enjoys.

If anyone -- you know, just sit down, jot us -- throw us an e- mail, write us a letter, let us know that the American public are behind us. Because we watch the news just like everyone else. It's broadcast over here in our chow halls and the weight rooms, and we watch that stuff, and we're a little bit concerned sometimes that America really doesn't know what's going on over here, and we get sometimes concerns that the American public isn't behind us and doesn't see the importance of what's going on. So that's something I think that all Marines, soldiers and sailors would like to hear from back home, that in fact, yes, they think what we're doing over here is important and they are in fact behind us.

DO IT NOW!!!

IT JUST TAKES A MINUTE OF YOUR TIME .. THAT'S NOT MUCH TO ASK FOR WHAT THEY'RE DOING FOR US!

.... AND, PLEASE PASS THIS EMAIL ALONG TO YOUR FRIENDS! ... SHOW OUR MARINES WE CARE!

Reminds me of my favorite Monty Python skit:

Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam...and it has nothing to do with 'guns'.

Me thinks this is more like APS material.

I know I'm gonna get flamed here but I have to say it...

Ya'll hearts are in the right place. But I have a 95% feeling that the guys and girls of RCT-6 wont ever see those emails. They'll hear a lovely figure read to them by the Col. himself, or some SgtMaj. He might even read a couple of them off during this big pep talk. And then 99% of the guys will walk away saying "those civilians don't know what we're doing over here." or something to that effect. I just got back from over there and thats more or less how it went down. We would get a pep talk about once every other month from some crusty general about how great a job we're doing when we all knew the generals have no idea what it is we really do.

You guys have you're hearts in the right place and theres nothing wrong with what you guys did. I just wanted to let ya know that the guys on the ground probably will never hear what you have to say, because thats the way I've seen this stuff work.

Col. Simcock of RCT-6 joined us again today (transcript here). I had a question about MOE and the use of heavy weapons, which I'll put in the extended entry. At the end of the call, however, he had a message for you:

Let me just say one thing about the e-mails. The response on that was tremendous. It was -- it literally -- it overwhelmed our systems over here. Within about -- I think it was two weeks, we had like 30,000 e-mails that came to us in support, and I would just like to say, we actually had to stop them because they were overwhelming our system, and we had to put them on a -- you know, refer them to our webpage.

If you can, I would appreciate you doing anything to thank the people for all their support that they gave us. The Marines over here really do appreciate that; that's something sometimes that gets lost. They -- as I said, they watch the news over here, and a lot of times they seem to think that, you know, the people in the United States are not supporting what we're doing over here. Nothing, you know, based on the amount of replies we got back, could be further from the truth. It was obviously an overwhelming response, and I just thank you, because it came from your guys' follow-up on me asking that.

I asked him if he wanted anything else from us, and he said no, no! "The Marines, soldiers, sailors over here are all doing very, very well, and again, I just want to thank you for the support that you all are giving us."

So, the commander of RCT-6 sends his regards to all of you, and his thanks.

Kalashnikov your right I didn't even think about that, what the Colonal said, "Hello, Marine. We thank you for what you're doing. You are in a noble task. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Best wishes & get home soon" is most likely what they'll hear.

It just seems to me that those in charge have no idea what we are doing over there. My experiances have led me to distrust nearly anyone who's collar shines (officers) and just about everyone with rockers (no offense to any retired or currently active board members). It seemed as those they were fighting a differant enemy, the media. Every time we were talked to the media was mentioned and how we shouldn't listen to them, how we were doing a good job and the right job. I know I sound like a conspiricy nut but thats how it all sounded.

Now if ya'll really want to help guys over there, care packages are where its at. That can get expensive but even a letter or magazine (hell they dont carry many gun rags over at the PX's over there and thats what alot of guys look for) is GREATLY appreciated. And they always let ya know it. I know I did and so did every other guy in my unit. So if anyone wants to help set up a THR care package fund or something let me know, I can talk with some of my buddies here and over there.

I can second this one from a civilian view . I've been "adopting" Marines & Soldiers since 2004 . Most are from gun/knife net forums , a few are our store customer's and we have a Marine cousin on his second tour now in Baghdad . Buy a carton of smokes or a sleeve of dip , some magazines and snacks and SEND them [ USPS has a Priority Mail box for $8.75 - perfect size] ! It makes you feel good and it makes them feel great . Somebody back home cares . Someone they've never met cared enough to send them a package . Buy a few less boxes of ammo and send a package . :)

I'll cut down on other expenses. Hell I'll eat Ramon soup for a month. But I'm cuttin into my ammo budget.
