I am looking for some behind the head, low-profile ear protection and was wanting to see what you guys use. My biggest concern is when I shoot rifles with the headband interfering with the stock. I have looked into in-ear custom (similar to hearing aids) and they run about $250, so I'm looking to stay below that amount.

Thanks for the help

The headband on ear muffs should not contact the stock (unless you're holding the stock awfully high ;)) on standard muffs, but you may want a set of low profile muffs to minimize the contact.

The best thing you can do is to wear NRR 30+ plugs under muffs to protect your hearing. Purchase equipment made by industrial safety manufacturers.

I use Peltor electronic muffs over plugs. When my Peltors finally fail I'll replace them with Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic muffs. You can get electronic HL muffs for ~$50. Foam plugs are remarkably inexpensive, but must be inserted properly to actually work.

A lot of guys like using the Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic muffs but I had trouble getting a good fit. I think the seal is made of a harder foam (?) so it would leave a little gap where my shooting glasses ran underneath, letting sound in. This was very unpleasant when a guy next to me starting shooting his .50 BMG with a muzzle break.

I use Howard Leight regular muffs which have a 30 db rating, and work well. I'm trying to find a good lower profile option though.

I've heard good things about Peltors.

I use ear plugs along with low profile Howard Leight L1 muffs. Never had any muffs interfere with the stock, kinda curious how you are holding the rifle.
