So I was browsing around on ammunitiontogo earlier looking up different SD rounds between .40 and .45. I generally prefer HST because its effective and cheap and I ended up finding something I had never heard of in the Federal line, expanding fmj. How does it compare to regular fmj and HP's? It says it feeds smoother than HP's, so thats the only benefit I can see it having. I would assume that it wouldn't penetrate like a regular fmj and it wouldn't expand as much as a HP.

So tell me, is this a good round, or something that should only be considered for a gun that doesn't like HP's?

Decent ammo but not as accurate as regular fmj and much more expensive.

I am not a huge fan of most of the magic bullets on the market but Federal produces two loads I really like, the Classic 9mm 115 JHP and the EFMJ

Winchester 230 JHP .45 acp is another favorite expanding/hollowpoint round.

There's quite a bit about them on the web. They seem to expand beautifully.

Better than ball if you cannot use hollowpoints

CARTER,

The reason for this ammo is that in some places and agencies, you cannot use hollow point which really do work better.

The U.S. military has experimented with them for use in IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN. Since IRAQ is winding down and AFGHANISTAN is a long range shooting match at this point, I doubt they will issue it.
The main hold up was the trouble of finding the bullets inside human bodies when using an xray. Massad AYOOB reported this in GUNS MAGAZINE last year.

In a place like NEW JERSEY, they may also be legal. I would try COR BON Powerball first, if it would legal in N.J. I have used Powerball and find it very accurate and super reliable in feeding in pistols that only take ball.

I think that efjm was a project in case the CLINTON Whitehouse managed to add an ASSAULT AMMO bill to the disgusting ASSAULT RIFLE BILL. It was a defensive measure we never needed.

It does what it is supposed to, but high quality hollow points like the bonded ammo and HYDRO SHOK are better and generally available. If your gun will not feed them or you cannot use them in you area, then go with efmj. It is still way better than full metal jacket ammo for defensive use.

Thanks for the info.

I can always count on you guys when I want the short and sweet answer without wading through thousands of pages of b.s. :D

Ammo like this and Carbon Powrball typically feed in guns that don't like open HPs, right?

It's legal to own JHP in NJ. Just can't carry them if you have a CCW (which isn't too much of a problem since no one gets CCW permits anyway). It can be used for hunting, target shooting and can be possessed in the owner's property. Regardless, S&W 645 is loaded with Galser +Ps and the Hornady TAPs.

It is "Cor-Bon" and yes, typically being the operative word. There's an equivalent from Hornady*, also, the name escapes me at the moment.

Not feeding HP ammo can be a symptom of a bigger problem than EFMJ or squishy-ball ammo can solve, hence the "typically" being emphasized by me.

*turns out I am bored enough to look it up:
Hornady® Critical Defense® ammo eliminates clogging with the use of the patented FTX® (Flex Tip eXpanding) bullet. <removed marketing hyperbole>
