I'm looking to trade rifles with someone whom I don't know. I'm in Missouri and he's in Michigan. How does the whole transfer thing work? I've never done this before. How do I know that he'll ship me his rifle when I ship him mine? Do we both ship them at the same time? Do we need to both sign a bill of sale? Explain this process to me. I want to make sure I'm covering all my bases before I initiate anything.

Each of you arranges with a local gun dealer to transfer the rifle to you from the out of state trader. Each of you ships his rifle to the other's dealer. It's legal to ship the gun to the dealer, but some dealers want the gun shipped by another dealer so ask first and you may have to pay your dealer to ship the gun is this case. Each dealer then transfers the respective rifle to the individual. The dealer will charge a fee for this, usually in the $20-$40 range.

So do I have to pay an FFL fee AND a shipping fee or does the FFL fee cover shipping as well?

Both FFL & shipping fee. Shouldn't be too much.
