Just got a new 40SW pistol. I can legallyand safely shoot where I live, but I have neighbors. Only public shooting range is a 40 minute trip for me.

This thing is loud. I have good neighbors and don't want to subject them to my noise. I wouldn't want to hear it if they were practicing.

Did some googling and found info on a sound muffler.....basically, it's a long row of tires that you shoot through. Suposedly, the sound is mostly trapped in the rig. The only info though is "I hear...someone said....they have". No info from someone who actually uses one. I'd like to know if anyone here has actually used one of these and if they work and maybe details on constuction. If it does work, this sounds like the perfect deal for my situation.

I know that it won't kill all the sound, but if it knock out at least half of sound this pistol can generate....great....will save me gas and time.

(Note to all you suppressor guys....I would go that route, but that is just more expense and red tape....not an option for me at this time)

One rig I saw had a a heavy blanket that the shooter covered himself (& gun) with to shoot prone through the tires from an elevated platform. Blanket might not work for your situation though...

I regret that I am unable to locate photos of the setup. It was real slick though - framed in plywood with a chronograph at the end of the tires.

I used to shoot at a private range in Upstate NY that had a similar set up- I was only there a few times- it belonged to a friend of a friends uncle.

As best I can recall it was about 12 clapped out truck tires in a 2x4 frame on a long table.

seemed to work pretty well, as long as the muzzle was about arms length inside.

years ago on a visit to my folks in VA, we went to such a public range.
They had 24" concrete culvert with tires at the ends. there was a few that was all tires.
It did help muffle the shot on the rifles, like Ramone said, as long as the muzzle was inside.
not so much for pistols as I recall.
Oh yea, not so good for black powder as those tubes hold the smoke for awhile.

We've shown pictures and designs before for noise enclosures at ranges in the U.S. and Switzerland.

They amount to an enclosure large enough for your muzzle to fit well within them with sound absorbing lining material.
