I am wondering what people thing/experienced with expandingFMJ (silicon on top of lead on scored flat point bullets) and or any other flatnosed ammunition? I like the feed reliability of these kind of FMJ rounds, but I am looking for something not as penetrating as ball and not as open mouthed as a lot of HP I see out there...

The EFMJ has performed well in tests , as well as JHPs. They have also performed well on the street. They feed very well and expand too ! BTW you can't tell about the performance just by looking at the bullet.

I have shot a couple hundred rounds of the Federal Expanding Full Metal Jacket ammunition in both 9mm and .45acp.
It functions and performs as advertised.
The drawback,
The ammunition was not accurate in any of the pistols I tested it in.

All the performance in the world is useless if you cannot place the bullet where it needs to go.

If you do not want penetration you might reconsider your idea of using a flatnosed bullet. The handgun hunters around here that hunt things that hunt back use flatnose hardcast bullets because they penetrate well and cut a good wound channel.

The EFMJ is my winter load because it will expand thru heavy winter clothing.Even the best hollow points may not.

EFMJ might be good for reduced penetration, but flat nosed ammo is not.
Flat nose FMJ's may actually out penetrate a round nose bullet especially in 9mm because the round nose bullet tends to tumble and the flat nose bullets tend to drive straight through.

EFMJ is absolutely terrible. If you look up any actual test data (not numbers in a book with no evidence), you'll see they expand smaller and penetrate shallower when compared to just about any hollowpoint.

Like .45 caliber, 200 grain EFMJ's expanded to .69" and penetrated between 8 3/4" and 9 3/8" (penetration in water is about 1.6x penetration in calibrated jello).

185 grain non +P Golden Sabers, on the other hand, generally penetrated between 11 7/8" and 14 3/8", and expanded to between .72" and .771".

I almost hate to recommend it, considering the terrible performance of the rest of their line, but you might want to look into Cor-Bon PowRBall ammo. The hollowpoint cavity is plugged up with a plastic ball, which is supposed to help immensely with feed reliability and intermediate barrier penetration, and actually increases expansion in tissue. Test results are pretty good usually, with over 12" penetration from the heavier bullets.

Thanks for the info on EFMJ.

Question: For those that shoot it, what are some of your favorite Flatnose ammo in .45?

Onmilo,

If you are unhappy with your EFMJ, I would be willing to take them off your hands, if they are Federal Brand. I have a .45 that shoots them very accurately and a 9mm backup gun that does as well.

I am here in Texas and the supplier that I use is out of them both and is not able to replace them.

Ammo can be shipped, I believe through several avenues.

That's what I am looking to do, buy a large lot of .45. I do want to get a large batch of flatnose too. I am not up on people's experience with these and really I see most everyone shooting either FMJ or JHP. I am curious about autoloaders' experience out there with this round.
