Hey everyone,

I was just offered an Egyptian Hakim in 8mm mauser.
Unfortunately I know next to nothing about these guns. Are there any specific problems I should be looking for? Are parts available? Are they reliable?

Any information would be extremely helpful

Parts are non existent.

They are heavy, overbuilt and very reliable

And lastly they can be downright dangerous to shoot if you don't select the right 8mm ammo at the right gas setting.

All in all not the gun for the casual milsurp guy or plinker. Save these for the hardcore gun nerds. On the plus side though these are for the most part $700 rifles now so if you can get it cheap buy it and flip it for a profit.

There are parts available, what you won't find are stocks. Extra mags costs are high but inexpensive MG13 mags can be easily modded to create 25 round mags. Before shooting the first time open the gas system all the way and close it as you shoot till it operates the action reliably.

A great manual can be found here: http://shooting.forsandiego.com/hakim/

My Hakim is very reliable and more accurate than the Draganov copies I have seen. Recoil is very low thanks to the gas system and the muzzle break however people beside further down the bench will hate the muzzle blast.

Got mine years ago for about $70. You need a camel to carry them. Mine was drug behind the camel for a while. Haven't shot it for accuracy, just for plinking. I got it because I had acquired a bunch of corrosive surplus. It's never missed a beat and has a decent trigger. I have liked it so well I bought more surplus ammo.

I use to make good money on side bets with mine. 5 steel plates at 200 yards, and they were heavy plates. Guys would cuss when they would turn one with their $2000 AR, even an edge hit with the 196 8mm would send them flying.

Listen to R W Dale. These rifles can be dangerous. It is an absolute must to have the headspace checked before you shoot it. And do NOT shoot Turkish ammo through it. The rifle will blow up:what:
I've had one. It's a novelty and I wouldn't have another. There are to many other good semi-auto rifles out there to be dealing with the questionables of the Hakim.

Not real sure were this is coming from, I sold a dozen of them in my shop and never had a blow up. I never saw one with a headspacing problem either. Yes, if you don't take the time to set up the gas system you can damage the rifle, but dangerous? That is like saying the M1 Garand is dangerous because you can blow them up with the wrong ammo. All you need do use is a little common sense. Mine has been shot with everything from the Egyptian surplus ammo available in the 80's up to the stuff you can buy today. It loves PRVI btw...very accurate with it.

+1 ^ I've put thousands of rounds of ammo through mine. All types. Blow up? All mil-surps should be inspected by a competent gun-smith. To paint these guns as unsound or dangerous is using a broad brush. My .02

451 obviously you don't seem to know the difference between the way an M1 Garand action operates and how the Hakim operates. All you need to do is sell one that has had it shot with the wrong ammo on the wrong gas setting and your behind will be in a sling.
And yea, NEVER shoot Turkish ammo out of a Hakim. It will blow up:mad: I know, it happened to mine. On the very first round of Turkish ammo run through it. Shot many handloads on the mild side, never a problem. I sold it to a friend he put Turkish ammo in it ................. first round BOOM:eek: Scattered the stock, magazine and parts all over the place and peppered my friends face. Yeah, you guys go ahead and shoot those Hakims .......... none for me thanks.
Cheap Egyptian made junk is what they are.

They're also somewhat vulnerable to out of battery firing if you have a hand load or factory cartridge with too little headspace.

The resulting KB is not pretty.

You wholly misunderstand the HAKIM-LUNGMAN

These rifles are 100% safe to shoot when in serviceable condition. BUT UNLIKE other milsurps that previously 100% safe rifle can become a danger to life and limb just by being uninformed and using the wrong loading, gas setting or via even a slight hand-loading case prep error.

These things are the Battle rifle version of a GSXR 1300 hayabusa. They can be perfectly safe in the hands of an informed knowledgeable and skilled user that respects what the machine can do. But just like the bike one mistake or slip in judgment and the Hakim will put you in the ER before you can say OUCH!
