Egyptian Hakim?

The milsurp bug has bit me hard recently, after a few more mosins, and a K31, I'm looking at something semi-auto in the $500 ballpark. I was thinking a Hakim would fill this niche. I can still get a case of 8mm Iranian surplus for $299 so ammo is still reasonable but I've heard it's ammo finicky. I'm just looking for a little more info on these rifles, ammo it likes or dislikes, stripper clips, accuracy, what to look for when buying one etc. Any Hakim enthusiasts that can help me out there?

I've had one for 20 years, paid 80 bucks for it. It's super fun, a very accurate, very controllable gun with little recoil. It's HEAVY, near 13 lbs, and has an effective muzzle break on it. Kinda reminds me of a BAR. All I have to do at the range to get attention is rattle off 10 rounds real fast. I also have a bayonet for it somewhere around here.

I've read that some of the middle eastern ammo is kinda hot for it. They have a valve that you can adjust to reduce the gas pressure on the bolt. It's a very strange design, took me a while to figure it out when it came in. But, turns out to be quite simple. It's a direct gas impingement system, no gas pistons.

I've heard that an MG34 magazine, 30 rounds, can be modified to fit the Hakim. Don't know, never got one for it. Very fun gun for no more than I gave for it. Too heavy and BIG to be much use except just for fun, but hey, it's just plain cool.

Much of the milsurp ammo out there is corrosive, so clean it thoroughly when you're done.

Hakim will help you to learn the definition of muzzle blast, it's vicious. They are great rifles and a lot of fun to shoot, Main thing to look for other than missing parts is going to be that the gas port turns freely. A lot of the gas ports get frozen in place and they can be hell to get freed up. Spare magazines are hard to find and if you do find one they are expensive. Keep your fingers out of the action, Hakims bite. I'd never sell mine.
