Hey y'all,

Had probably my shortest-ever trip to the range yesterday, as I needed to sight-in a new .22 for next weekend regardless of how late I got there. I had the added necessity of picking up a cleaning kit I had left there, ahem.

I took only two rifles, the Savage MKII for sighting-in and my VZ-24 8mm Mauser. Talk about polar opposites! Shooting only those rifles gave great insight on the fundamentals of good riflery.

The VZ-24 had a great showing! It shoots tremendously high at 100yds (it's lowest rear sight setting is 300m!). I was able to line-up the windage to great effect, however: few shots varied more than an inch to either side. May have had some flyers, but generally the Romanian 150-gr surplus is good (I plan on getting some Yugo 196-gr to feed it and my Hakim later). I was once again amazed at how balanced and controllable this rifle is with a sling shooting offhand at a bench. The length, weight, and balance make it almost as accurate standing, as it hardly changes how well it sits using a sling.

The Savage did well too. I didn't try to make as extensive use with the sling as with the VZ-24, tried to brace it more with my hands and gun case I was using. Pick-your-squirrel's-ear accurate at 50yds with the factory 3-9x40 Bushnell Sharpshooter (ha ha) scope. Plenty of glass for this little gem though, and I count on many years of improving relations between us. Very good at 75yds too, though I let my skills slip a bit. Interesting to note that it is not substantially more accurate than my long-barrelled Marlin 60, which, from the same setup, can do repeated 100-yd shots on clays and then kick the shards around.

Cheers!
