Elcan DigitalHunter Rifle Scope

It looks pretty neat, but I don't know that I would buy one.

The zoom appears to be digital, not optical. That would explain the zoomed-in blurry images. Explanation: The lowest magnificaiton is 2.5x and that is going to be the optical magnification of the scope. The resolution of the image isn't very high. Thus when zoomed, you are just magnifying the pixels produced from the 2.5x magnification and its level of resolution. The result is that the image is blown up, but blurry.

If the scope was optically zoomed, we should have been able to easily read the labels on the water and orange drink bottles at 100 yards.

The blurry zoom may hamper use at greater distances, FYI.

They said it was 2.5x16 magnification, but at 1:05 in the video, the scope is zoomed to 16.5.

I don't like the fact that the batteries are to be removed when the scope is not in use to save the batteries. That means the system has some sort of electronic drain for which they were not able to correct. Obviously, the power isn't necessary to save settings because they said the settings would be saved even with the batteries removed. So the vampire issue is elsewhere in the system.

Given that the batteries are to be removed each time, a metal screw cap on a metal tube to hold the batteries would be much more efficient and suffer less damage from use than the plastic flex-and-fit door they have over the battery compartment.

I think the concept is great, but the whole setup is still a bit crude. I would hate to have to be returning my $1200-1600 scope to Elcan for repairs because the battery door or housing around the battery door broke from putting in and taking out the batteries too many times. Then again, if you only use the gun a couple of times a year, the door will last you many years, until the plastic becomes brittle with age. It would be nice if the scope first had a much higher optical magnification and ideally that it be variable, such as 2.5-10x and then the user could zoom in above 10x.

I wonder just how water resistent the unit is. The battery door does not look like it would seal well. All the electronic controls are on top and would be directly impacted by rain. I wonder how well sealed they are.

If I was going to buy one, I would buy the Digital Day/Night version and thus have night vision as well.
