First, I need to get this out of the way:

:p Bruss01, get out of here! No reading this thread! I mean it, Honey, or you'll get coal in your stocking!!

Back to my intro and questions:

Hey, folks, I'm new at posting but I have been reading over my husband's shoulder for over a year now. Hello!

I have a few questions about the electronic bore cleaner. It has appeared on my huband's Christmas list and he has sent me two emails regarding it - I'm starting to think he wants one.;) He's a gadget freak, so wanting to experiment with this is understandable.

So, here are the two links I was sent:

http://www.lovemyguns.com/

and

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/productdetail.aspx?p=9704

I think the rifle cleaner would be of more use to him...but after that, I haven't a clue. Which company would you folks recommend and why? What-all do I need to get, so he'd be able to use it right away? What kind of accessories does he need/want?

Many thanks!

well, not knowing about either, it looks like you have to get fluid, plugs, o-rings, cleaning agents, etc. i would personally, if choosing for myself, go with the ebc design first, seems they are a little cheaper, and also the extras you have to get.

I'd buy the Outers kit because it's been around for years, is well thought of, and Brownell's carries it. The other one - who knows, it could be great, but I'd buy the Outers.

After looking at the spec page, I 'think' all you need is the kit. He can order the replacement fluids, o-rings and stuff after he uses up what's included. Here's the best thing about Brownell's, they have Tech Support folks who love to answer every sort of question:

U.S. Phone Numbers
Ordering: 800-741-0015
Technical Support: 800-741-0015

Call them and double-check that the kit is all he needs to get started.

I have an Outers Foul Out II. It comes with pretty much everything you need. If he will be using it for long barreled target rifle(s), you might need a longer rod. There are two cleaning solutions, one for copper and one for lead. For long barreled large caliber rifles the amount of solution provided with the kit will go pretty quick. IMHO this doesn't need to be done routinely and is only required on heavily fouled barrels. It can be pretty useful for old mil surp stuff. The directions need to be followed carefully, especially using it for the first time. After use the bore needs to be dried and lubed post haste.
Welcome to the group.

Thank You

Thank you for your advice, guys!

Yes, he has quite a few mil surps that need a good cleaning

I figure this bore cleaner is a nice reward for remembering to put down plastic trash bags and newspaper on my diningroom table before cleaning the guns! Baby steps, baby steps...

Thanks again.

I have the Outers II and used it quite frequently. It does a very good job although it is a PITA. I started using a foaming bore cleaner called Wipe-Out and the Outers stays in its case. Spray the foam in the barrel, let it sit overnight, patch it out. That's all there is to it. It works on copper and powder fouling, so for lead, I still use the Outers.

If he uses it on a semi auto, without dissembling and plugging the gas port (the real PITA), it might cause him to exclaim golly gosh gee whiz durn, or something like that.
