Headed to Central Colorado for a October Elk hunt. I am thinking that two to three layers would be in order but am not sure how heavy. Does anyone have a proven clothing system for this area that they recommend from experience for the early season? (Also camo pattern)

Base - Poly long underwear. NOT cotton.
Mid - Fleece zipup jacket with standup collar
Outer - M65 field jacket with insulated liner.

This gives you three garments with 4 layers. You should be able to mix and match to suit. In October the temp could be anything from 70 to 20 F. You just never know.

Colorado requires at least a blaze hat and vest. I use a cotton baseball cap and a knit cap to pull over it if it gets cold.

Layer your socks, too.

A poly sock or some other material that will wick moisture away from your feet and a pair of wool or wool blended socks will help alot. That and a pair of well broken-in boots with at least 600 grams of thinsulate. I'm partial to Danner's myself.

I'm also a huge fan of patagonia uinergarments and outergarments. It's spendy but wears well and lasts forever. well broken in boots are the most important. If they're not broken in when you start, they will be when you're done. I like my outermost garment to be light and waterproof just in case.
