Can anyone tell me how Elmer Keith used to load his .45-70s? I heard somewhere that he wrote all about it in a book, but I can't find anything about it.

I'm don't plan to actually do it myself, but I'd like to know how he would have loaded them for a Winchester 1886, back in about the fifties or earlier.

Just checked, Lyman lists max load for this rifle as 48 grains 3031 with a 405 grain soft point. so This load is posted for entertainment purposes only.
CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

in the 1886 Keith used 53 grains of 3031 with a 405 grain jacketed soft point bullet.

This developed 1850 fps and around 36,000 psi.

He also recomends this load for the 1895 marlin.

This is from "Gun Notes" a collection of his writing.

Remember though componets may have changed since then, always work up loads carefully.

Edited because I either can't read or can't remember a number long enough to type it. Thanks Pumpkinheaver
