According to what I found on the internet the rear sight of my EMP is held in place by red loctite. Also, red loctite will break down at about 300F.

Is this so and if I were to place my slide into a toaster over and heat it to a bit over 300F would that hurt the slide and/or sights?

Most folks advocate putting the tip of a soldering iron into the center of the allen screw that anchors the sight.

Haven't tried it myself, but sounds like it would be worth a try.

man, i thought this was going to be about Electro Magnetic Pulses' effects on red locktite

Orion has the right idea. I wouldn't heat the whole slide just to loosen some locktite. Be aware that Aerokroil and various other penetrating oils will weaken locktite if allowed to sit in a well saturated condition.

To answer your question the heat wouldn't hurt the slide. Temps below 475F won't compromise the heat treatment of the slide but it is unnecessary to heat the entire slide .

As for the sights.. If they are tritium vials...don't go there! IF you must loosen loctite on a tritium sight...stick to dosing it with Aerokroil, PB blaster, Liquid Wrench until it softens.

Cheers
Mac.
