about how many rounds before end shake starts showing up and how to fix it? i have a service six, i bought it from a guy who's uncle used it as a duty weapon. he said that he would estimate about 5000 rds have been through it. it is tight on lockup with no problems, just thought i would ask in case it happen's to me. I am keeping this gun and will be handing it down to my son. i'm not putting much through it, i shoot every few weeks mabe 20rds or so. thanks

I doubt your son's great-grandson will have problems with it. If so, it can be relatively easily fixed.

If y'all can buy enough ammo to wear it out, you can buy another gun.

Don't worry about. SHOOT it!

Would you quit worrying about this Ruger already?
You have one of the most durable revolvers ever made. You are not shooting it enough to even have to think about these things if you were shooting full powered Magnum ammo exclusively. I suspect you are shooting mainly non +P .38s.
If you and your decendants remain shooting this gun in this fashion, It will still be going strong sometime in the early 3000s. Every thing else you own will be long gone before anything happens to that Ruger. Yes, it really is that well made.

thanks, i only shoot 357 magnums, 158 grain soft point or hollow point. since i don't shoot much i figured i'd shoot what i use to protect myself. my lockup is nearly unmovable and back and forth play is unmovable, it won't budge back and forth. the cylinder even at rest is real tight. but if i release it, it spins straight and true. i guess i like planning ahead but on some things it's not necessary. thanks everyone.

Even if you would start to get a little end play, a gunsmith can put shims in there to take up what little bit of end shake that might occur.
I've been shooting a Model 28 since the late 1970s when I bought it used and last year I took it to a gunsmith for the first time since it was made. It was made in 1958 and he put a .001"shim in it and told me it probably didn't even need that. was good to go. I've shot some pretty hot magnums through this thing right along. He said the timing was also perfect and not to worry about it.
Your Ruger will be the same way. You should be good to go for the rest of your life especially if your shooting these pathetically week factory load practice ammo they make today.

My Security Six has around 5000 rounds through it, lock up and end shake are the same as when new. Shoot it it's going to out live you.

Just limit the number of extreme velocity (+P) loads you shoot and you will never have a problem with endshake. It is possible to shoot a Ruger loose, but you really really have to work at it. As in cases of ammo.
