DO YOU CARRY -- Point UP or Point DOWN ???

I have always carried a Spyderco Endura which is carried, when clipped to my pocket, in a knife point UP position.

I was in a knife store today looking at the Benchmade Ascent, and I noticed it is, when clipped to my pocket, carried knife point DOWN.

Since I am used to my Endura mode of carry, the Benchmade Ascent, to me, seemed to be ODD when carried in the point down manner.

Any comments on the point up vs. the point down mode of carry, and what is the proper way to quickly open a knife, like the Benchmade Ascent, when clipped to your pocket in the point down manner?

Yup. Those are very early prototypes.

The main body is .060" grade kydex, while the belt connections are .090"...linked on a "pivot pin" setup, it's the only kydex rig that "flexes" even more than leather as you sit and stand.

The thing is, everything I need to make 'em (all black now!) is portable. While the edge finishing with felt dremel polishing wheels isn't as good as what you can do with a bench grinder and 8" cloth wheel, it's not half bad. And I can fit something right to your gun, your body, etc. I've done one rig for a dude with a 32" waist where the holster itself curved right around his body...he swore it was the most comfortable IWB rig he'd ever worn.
 
Point down. I had my only knife-related "accident" with point up carry. The blade had opened ever so slightly and I reached into my pocket and opened up my thumb.
 
Point Down.
I had an auto in my pocket once... getting into a Miata it opened as I was starting to sit. It put a nice stab wound in me.
Since then, it's all point down.
As to which is faster, it depends on which your more used to.
 
Can anyone explain, or have a website link to, the proper way to quickly open a knife that is clipped POINT DOWN in your pocket?

Point up, for me. I cannot figure out a good way to get a point-down blade out of the pocket, rotated into the palm and blade out in anything resembling a safe and effective way. I had a CRKT M16 that was carried point down and that thing was a bear to get open in a fight.

If you can explain it (maybe that elusive Brownie Pop), I'd be interested. Until then, it's gonna have to be a point-up 550 griptillian in my weak-side pocket.
 
Tip down, lockbacks not linerlocks.

Exception is the Tarani Karambit Journeyman in my pocket at the moment which is tip up/reverse grip from pocket. The lockbacks have never given me a problem with opening in the pocket during physical exertion due to the locks design.

EDC today besides the karambit is chinook [ tip down/lockback ].

Tip down from the pocket can be very fast when opening applied correctly.

Both!

I carry a Meyerco (Blackie Design) Tanto and its point down with thumb hole, not stud. Its fast for me because of the size of the thumb hole. My Bro. just got back from Iraq and I gave him a CRKT M16. He loved it and was going to toss his 10 year old Cold Steel. I saved it and smuggled it into work (Secure Area) and leave it there. I'm not nearly as fast with the CS in tip up, but I have a blade where others don't. Its like being the one eyed man in the land of the blind.

I guess the answer is to pick what works best for you and stick with it.

Doesn't it depend where the clip is mounted on the knife?

Can you change where the pocket clip is mounted? I tried this and there were inserts in the handle where the clip screwed into, hence no moving the clip to a different position.

All of my pocket folders are point down, except the Mini Commander which is point up for the Wave feature. I prefer point up, it seems that when I grab it in my pocket my hand is already in the position.

My Benchmade Ascent came point down, and I've carried it that way ever since. My AFCK came with the clip installed so that it was point up, but I couldn't get used to it. I quickly switched the clip to orient the knife poiint down.
 
My AFCK allows me the option, and I find after trying both that I will sacrifice a little speed for the safety of point down carry. It's a training issue to deploy it as rapidly with less knife to grab than with tip-up, but the Spydie hole helps make the deployment a blink-of-an-eye proposition anyways. Since I am more likely to face the blade opening on its own and jabbing my thigh than I will need the split second that tip up gains me, I guess I have decided to take my chances that I am betting right. I'd rather concentrate on getting my 1911 into action ASAP than the knife, which is definitely a last ditch, empty primary, ground fighting weapon as I see things.
 
I carry an Endura (point up) with a cable tie thru the thumb hole to act as a cheap "wave" It opens faster than my autos but is ugly.
