Looking at the above rifle. It's a Golden State Arms " Sporterized " version. Not sure what that means for sure.

I've read that one can replace the rear sights with scope bases without redrilling. Can anyone conform or deny this?

My goal is to have an inexpensive plinker and a fun project. I like to shoot and reload. I have plenty of hunting guns and only one tag a year.

Any other advice? I'm open to suggestions.

Since you did not post a picture, can't see the Golden State Arms Enfield. However if you wish to know about Golden State Arms in Pasadena CA, this website has a lot of information, including some of the rifles they "sporterized". Golden State Arms went into bankruptcy in 1966, the end or an era. The 1968 Gun Act explicitly went after these arms importers so it is doubtful Golden State Arms would have survived past 1968 anyway.

As for scope bases, do a search, I have seen a number of no drill scope bases for Enfields. They tend to put the scope up high.

I put a scope on one Enfield I owned. Put the scope up pretty high. Had to modify the stock in order to get any sort of cheek weld to it. Rifle was pretty accurate. I sold it about 4 years ago. I have seen a few that were "sporterized" and they just did not look "right" for me.

Forgot is mention, some guys up in NE Nevada use unmodified No. 4's for deer hunting. 303 is a good deer killing cartridge.

Golden State modified a lot of guns - some better than others - and had many variations. Without pics we can't be much help.

If it's like the one that i have, they ground down the rear part of the receiver removing the rear site and charger bridge...so no, on mine you won't be able to use a scope mount without doing some drilling. However, given the variety they produced* it could be anything.

*: and by "produced" i mean "bubba'd"

ATI makes a scope base that replaces the rear flip up sight. Two cap screws through the mounting holes for the sight and then two set screws up front to keep it in place. Pretty rock solid on mine. I took it off since I needed the scope for another gun but one day I'll put it back on!
