I picked up a 1917 SMLE III* for cheap. It's already been sporterized so the damage is done. It feels like whoever did it was on a budget, or maybe it was made to be a kid's first "real" rifle. The length of pull is very short and the forestock is very narrow and shallow, to the point a bipod cannot be fitted to the front lug at all. They did a decent job of adding scope mounts though, so there's that.

The butt appears to be original and has the brass plate with the little storage hole (it opens). It's just uncomfortably short for me and since it's already chopped up I may as well make it fun to shoot.

Who makes good yet affordable polymer stocks for the III?

Good is highly subjective. I had a No.4 with an ATI stock that looked and fit OK and didn't appear to hurt accuracy much, but I might get lynched here for calling it good. I restocked that action as a faux No.5 carbine -- I'd give you that ATI stock once dug from storage, only it won't fit your action.

ATI does offer a No.1 MkIII stock but I have no experience using one: https://www.atioutdoors.com/product/enfield-monte-carlo-stock-no-1-mk-3/

Will I get in trouble for thinking the ATI is nice looking? I wouldn’t do it to one that wasn’t already modded. But if I find one that’s chopped I’m doing it for a truck gun.

I went with an ATI in black but added a note to hold for a woodland brown if it wasn't much of a wait. Something like $83 delivered with good reviews all around. Good enough for what I'm trying to do. The wood looks so much better to me but the ATI is by no means ugly.

Thank you.

I got the stock and installed it on the gun. Quick and easy. I also expected that it would have some kind of recoil pad but it's just hard plastic. Disappointing, but shame on me for not verifying. Will any recoil pad work with ATI stocks? Preference is a screw-on replacement of the hard plastic plate but a slip-on will work too.

All the ATI stocks I've used had actual recoil pads though they were usually pretty bloody hard.
If that plastic plate comes off you can fit any grind to fit recoil pad to it pretty easily
