I'm restoring an old 1853 3 band from IMA and am trying to decipher the proof marks on the barrel. They appear to be symbols rather than letters or numbers. Anyone know a source for old Enfield markings?
They probably are symbols. Assuming that was a British military weapon (and not made in Asia or made for another country) it should have British military proof marks which would include crossed pennants, a crown, and an inspector number. Usually a bronze brush will clean out the marks and a good magnifying glass will show them well enough to describe if not photograph.
