Enfield question...

I just got my Lee Enfield No 1 Mk 3 and took it out for a test drive. I was suprised to find out that every shot would cause the safety to engage and I would have to take it off to extract the spent round and chamber a fresh shot. Is this normal or do I need to have something adjusted? If someone can tell me how to correct that I would be greatfull.

Is the safety fairly loose? Does it move when you cycle the bolt?

Sounds like the spring is not holding the safety lever back. Probably worn a bit too much.

I am not sure when I cycle the bolt normally it has never engaged. Only when a round is fired. I don't think the recoil is causing it but I could be wrong. But, yes it is a rather light pull to engage it. I'm thinking I might just need to tighten some screws but I don't want to do anything till I have a better idea what is going on.

The recoil has to be causing this. It is the only thing that kind of makes sense. The safety should be a hard pull over. Easy enough with a thumb, but a challenge with a pinky.

It sounds like either a loose screw or a worn locking bolt spring. It shouldn't be doing what it is doing at all. It shouldn't be too expensive or hard to find a replacement spring.

Replacement parts from Springfield Sporters. I would suggest getting the Stratton book on the #1mkIII from North Cape Publishing. Enough info there to do anything you want in the way of repair and knowlege.
