How do you measure the chamber (12ga) for the correct length of shell? I have a SXS nitro steel shotgun that I might like to shoot. I'm not a shotgun guy anyway. I've been told that English guns used shorter shells and use of plastic crimped shells can raise pressure to dangerous levels.

Brownells has a gauge for $20.

I would just assume a gun of that style had 2 1/2" chambers unless marked otherwise.

If it is English it MUST be marked, most likely on the barrel flats or on the water table.
