Entering law enforcement at @ 40

While I would have liked to have done so earlier in life. The opportunity has recently opened up through a firend of mine. While I consider myself level headed and both competent mentally and physicaly what challenges can I expect. What, if any suggestions would someone that has been in the same situation, have for me.

It can certainly be done; I did it at 41, and the Academy staff told me they regularly had guys older than me go through.

Just be in the best shape of your life going in, and remember that you're not made of elastic anymore--little injuries and strains take longer to heal. But having made it to 40, you probably know that already.

Good advice at any age. I went through at 26, we had guys in our class that were nearing 40. The ones that arrived in decent shape made it through, and the ones who didn't did not, no matter what age bracket.
 
I went through it at age 23. I managed to stick with it for 3 years, but got really discouraged with all the BS associated with it.
But, good luck. I wish you nothing but the best.

I think it can be done...I sure hope so any way as I was hired yesterday by a local P.D. and will head off to the academy next month.

Junky, I did! Just finished last November. You have the delights of Officer Dudley, who runs the Physical Training portion of the Academy, ahead of you! Shoot me an email; I'll be glad to share what I can to prep you!
 
I did three different academies...one at 23, one at 24, and one at 37. I found that the third was easiest as I knew what to expect, though injuries did take their toll!
 
It's as much a mental game as a physical one. The only advice I have for you is run, run, run to get ready and FEEL young. I was one of the "old men" in my academy too (age 31). The biggest problem I had with the academy was that they preached health and fitness.....but then the meals we had access too (at a college dining facility) were anything but *lol*.

Eyes forward, keep your mouth shut, do what you're told and make sure you shine them boots!!!:evil: You'll do fine.....
 
I was also thinking about joining too, not to hijack your thread, but to all LEO's out there, what are the chances of a patrolman transfering to another state, say in 2 years (thats 2 yrs after academy) I do not want to live here forever. :) If a spouse gets another job in another state, does that play into it? Or does just applying for it and waiting for an opening? How does it work?
 
Guys, this is a firearms discussion forum, not a police forum. There are plenty of those out there. Please use them.
