I recently ran across some of these in a CA gun shop:

Everyone in the store seemed drawn to the black rifles in the rack that had -- *gasp* -- pistol grips! Entreprise has gone ahead and minimally mangled some FALs to be CA-legal, and they seem to have done a much better job than the Robinson "cut off the pistol grip without adjusting the stock" M96, or the "break open the receiver to load the fixed mag" AR. These seem like they'd be fairly handy to load and fire.

As best I could tell from inspecting one without pulling it apart, it seems that the rifles have an otherwise-detachable 10rd mag held in place by a mag release that's fixed in the "closed" position, and they've changed the dust cover to allow top-loading a round at a time.

These are very tempting, in that they look enough like a real FAL (with the bolt closed) to let me make-believe that I've got an eeevil black rifle. Better yet, once I escape to Free America, it seems that they can be de-neutered with a simple parts swap!

What do you folks think of these? Has anyone here had experience with Entreprise FALs? (To the "buy a DSA" folks: I'd love to buy a DSA, but they don't appear to offer anything that's legal in my state-run fantasy land.)

I think they can also be loaded with stripper clips. They are pricey, in the $1K+ range. Personally I'd rather get an M1A that takes a detachable mag than the FAL that works like an SKS. It is an evil looking black rifle, though. :D
