Hi, I recently got a Eotech 512 and really love it. It is extremely durable and very easy to mount I am thinking about getting another one, what is the general consensus on the Eotech 512.

Its generally a pretty good optic, the only downsides I hear is that its still quite long. Not a big deal really if you have a continuous top rail. Big pro is that the battery is easily replaceable and widely available.

I'm looking to get one myself in the future, but possibly a different model.

what firearm are you putting it on?

I have a 512 that is pushing 10 years. Never had an issue. It's gone from a Colt Sporter Match HBAR, to a Marlin 336 (ugly combo, that) to a Mossberg 500, to a Beretta CX4 Storm, to a 10/22, to a Ruger Charger, to a Rock River AR, so I consider it to be versatile.

I like the fact that it uses AA batteries, like most everything in the house from flashlights to the TV remote. If it starts blinking (low battery) odds are that there is something in the house/car/neighbor kids' toys that I can appropriate.

It is a bit long, but I also have an EXPS2 if I need to free up rail space for a magnifier. If I had that to do over again, I would go with the XPS2, as I prefer an absolute cowitness on an AR.

I did add the GG&G flip up covers, the glass stays clean, and you can't lose them.

i'm not a fan. i got rid of mine. lots of people love them though. my biggest beef aside from the reliability problems they had, was the controls stink and battery life is abysmal compared to aimpoint.

I've had mine for a couple of years now. Works great and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

There were a couple production runs that had problems going through batteries. I've not heard this to be a problem for a while now.

I've got a 512 going on eight years now with zero problems. Stays zeroed, have kept same batteries in it for months and turns right on, bright and good to go ... And frankly, given the cheap price of replacement batteries, I could care less if I have to occasionally replace batteries. Yeah, it's great that my AIMPOINT can stay turned on for three years, but gosh, are you guys too cheap and too lazy to swap out double-As?

The controls stink? Huh? Yeah, they're a little small and hard to get to if your device is snugged back toward your BUIS, and you need two thumbs to turn it off, but really, they're not that bad ...

If you don't require a HWS compatible with night-vision devices, the 512 is one of the best. I'll always have a 512 mounted on one of my M-4s.

And um, OpticsPlanet, you can get an absolute co-witness with a 512, don't need the XPS2 (a worthy HWS for sure) for that ...

If you need further affirmation that your 512 is GTG, go over to ARFCOM, lots of fans there (lots of AIMPOINT and ACOG fanboys, too) ...
