Okay, here's the deal. I've got a new Bushmaster AR carbine, with a flat top pic rail. I have decided to put an EOTech or HOLOsight on top. Here's where it gets confusing. I want to put on an EOTech standard shape profile, because the height of the reticle will cowitness on the front sight of the AR. I also want a version that uses AA or AAA batteries, not the "N" batteries.

My understanding is that the Bushnell HOLOsight model 51-0021 has the same "guts" as an EOTech. It basically just lacks the govt. version's protective "roll cage." I don't plan to run obstacle courses with my AR, so I can live without the protective cover.

Now, to confuse matters, Bushnell seems to be switching over to the XLP or eXtra Low Profile model, which seems to have a narrower/lower viewing screen. I think that the reticle red dot is a half inch lower than the EOTech sized HOLOsight. This means that it won't cowitness the front sight on my AR, unless I add a riser block between the pic rail and the sight. I'd rather avoid this situation. (In its favor, at least the XLP uses AAA batteries.) This XLP version sells for about $250.

According to the catalogs and internet sources I can find, the EOTech and the EOTech-sized HOLOsight are now mainly available in the "N" battery version. I can't recharge these batteries, and would prefer to avoid having to use them.

(To make it even MORE confusing, Sportsman's Guide, in their 2007 Fall Shooting Supplies catalog, shows the wrong picture of the XLP. The ad for the XLP shows an EOTech-sized model 51-0021. I called them, and they were pretty shocked, and said they were putting out a flash message around the building. I wonder how many returns will result from showing one model's picture, while selling another? I'll bet a lot of folks expecting to get the pictured EOTech-shaped model won't be happy with the funky looking and lower XLP.)

Cheaper Than Dirt's catalog does show an EOTech model 512, in an AA battery version, for $390. They also sell an EOTech 552 that is night vision compatible for $460. Interestingly, some catalogs (Brigade QM) consider this to be "restricted availability and won't sell it to mere civilians, while Cheaper Than Dirt will.)

Anybody have any advice? Are there Bushnell HOLOsights now available in the EOTech profile and reticle height, that run on AA or AAA batteries, for under $300? Or should I just bite the bullet and order an EOTech 512 for $390 from Cheaper Than Dirt? Or just get a new HOLOsight XLP for $250, accept its funky look, and put a half inch spacer under it to lift the reticle to AR cowitness height?

Any advice will be gladly taken. Sorry this took so long to put into the form of a question.

I have a 511 on my PS90 - the rail is short, so I wanted that version - The gun fell over on the table once at the range - it fell off of sandbags and onto the table. The gun came out fine - but the hit to the Eotech was hard enough to mess up the zero. I can honestly say, that w/o the roll cage on that EOtech, I would have broken it. Had I bought the cheaper Bushnell, it would not be working now. So, even w/o a tactical obstacle course, accidents happen.

Now, U probably want the 512 version. U can use Lithium batteries in that for about 1100 hours. Unless U plan to use night vision, U don't really need that version.

We have 2 sponsors, Bud's and Top Gun Supply, selling EOtechs for a sale price at our site - the FN Forum. Come check them out, Their prices for the 512 are lower than what U mentioned. I got mine from Top Gun and am satisfied.

Travis,
I don't have an answer for you other than to suggest you visit the "optics, mounts and sights" forum at www.ar15.com.

They seem to have endless discussions on the pros/cons of the various holosight versions. (As well as just about every other red dot on the market...)

Thanks everybody. I'm going to do some more research, and then I'll probably get an actual EOTech 512, in AA battery form, despite the extra cost.

i have the bushnell version. perfect for the gun it's on (not terribly serious)

co-witnessing is overrated.

I think the sale I mentioned above is almost over - better jump on it...

I just bought the AA version of the EOTech. There was a group buy set up by zeroskillz.

You can find the Eotech 512 for $335 to $340 at any given time on the net. $390 is too expensive IMO. $50 is $50 to me.

I have the 553 on my issue M16, and my wife has the 512 on her paper-killer Beretta Storm. We've never had a problem with either, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I needed it.

I have a 512 & a 552 and really like them. I was talked out of the Bushnell by guys that told me to just save up a few more $$ and I'm glad I did...the EOTechs rock!

Bushnell is a partner of EOTECH . The one does not make the sight without the other. matching the model#s might be difficult but they are exactly the same with a different name plate. Except for the XLP model, but eotech still gets their cut of the proffit.
Some people are just not happy getting something for less $:banghead:
and others make assumptions with bad intel.

Bud's price is $355. for a 512. It's their 'secret' price - you have to log in to the site and then they'll email you the price with a limit on how long you get it for.

Does anyone need to ask how I know?

but they are exactly the same with a different name plate.
No, they are not. The Bushnell has a plastic cover over the lens.
The eotech has mil-spec water-proofing and an aluminum "roll-bar" over the lens.

The new & improved XLP is/was a POS! And is now a footnote in history.
They have already stopped making it and went back to the Holosight again.
