Equipment Needed for Garand Highpower

I've got a Garand on order from the CMP, and would like to use it in some informal highpower shoots. At this point, I'm not interested so much in accuracy mods. I plan to clean it up, have it inspected and then shoot it mostly for grins. Any serious competition would be done with an AR.

While waiting for the rifle to arrive, I've picked up a few en-bloc clips (both 8 and 2 round), a good sling, a single-load device (from Brownells) and some Korean milsurp ammo.

Not being familiar with the M-1, are there any other pieces of equipment specific to the rifle that would be required (or incredibly handy) for shooting a normal highpower COF?

Shooting adhesive. Those slick buttplates are a PITA! But it will be a lot of fun.


Maybe a Boyd's stock if you get serious for Garand matches?

I know that "technically" it's called a buttplate. However, it still seems that if it's a PITA, your hold is drastically wrong. BTW, if you were to try to post some pictures demonstrating that on your deck, I feel CERTAIN that the neighbors would call the cops.

A shooting coat and spotting scope would be nice . So would a stool and a canteen of water along with lunch and a clipboard and pen .

I think TrapperReady has all the basic equipment needs...you're asking about Garand specific stuff, right?

You know, it took me a few seconds to figure out what you were saying...I'm thinking, "Man, this guy is insulting my position!" Then I figured it out. lol! I don't think "that" position would ever NOT be a PITA!

Steve - Don't worry, I would never insult your shooting position, at least until I could consistently outshoot you (like that would ever happen).

You are correct, I was just asking about items specific to the M-1.

Don't sell yourself short. Age or tenure means nothing in this sport. Just ask the 16 year old girl that outshoots me at every match I attend. She should get her High Master card very soon. I am a little late in my own ascension. That's ok because I plan to go HM next year or maybe one year after that. Then some guys are gonna pay because I'm still young enough to show up to matches for the next 20 years, assuming I don't get bored with it. I want to be one of the guys that make others say, "aww crap, Steve showed up today"

So what have I said in the past about this not being competitive? lol. In truth, you only compete with yourself, but the first time you shoot with other guys of your capability and you kick their butt, you taste the blood. I tasted it when I beat Jon and another guy with that 199-9x in the rapid prone. Jon is still a better shooter than I am, but I don't plan on that being the case forever!

So, with a 199-9x in the rapid prone, did you feel great about it, or did you think "If only I'd made one shot a little better?"

When I started trap shooting, I was pretty happy to get a 21 or 22, but the first time I got a 24, I was just hacked off about the one clay I missed.

It still happens to me. If I get a 22 or 23, I'll think "That's about average.", but when I get a 24, I think "D@#$it, I can't believe I missed one!".

Just because you're competing against yourself doesn't mean that you're not out for blood.

It was truly bittersweet. It got sweeter when I checked the other guys' targets in my scope though!

I'm not one for snappy lines, so I blurted out the best thing I could. Something about, "You guys don't even know what kind of toast you are." Goofy, but I had to say something!
