Our club near Houston, TX holds a "John C. Garand Memorial Match" periodically, about three or four times ayear. The next one is Sunday, May 23rd. Sign-in is 8:00 - 8:30 AM.

This is an invitation to any THR member near Houston, who is interested in Highpower or in a CMP Garand, to come shoot the match.

The match is more of a clinic for new shooters than a straight competitive event, even though scores are kept and a match bulletin sent out. Participation is good for the "50 shots in competition" rule for the CMP. Several of our members have more than one Garand, so (depending on how many people show up) there will be a rifle to shoot.

You are also welcome to bring your Springfield, Enfield, Mauser, SKS, AK-clone, or whatever retired military rifle you want, but you have to supply your own ammo.

The $15 match fee covers ammo for the Garand (50 rounds + 6 sighters) as well as the paperwork. There is also a brief discussion of how to load the Garand without getting your thumb mashed, how to rig the sling for seated and prone, and so forth.

Course of fire is inverted from the regular across-the-course match; 20 rounds (+ 6 sighters) prone slow fire, 10 rounds (2+8) prone rapid (70 seconds), 10 rounds (2+8) seated rapid (60 seconds), and 10 offhand (standing, no sling support) slow fire. The entire match is fired from the short line (200 yards).

Only caveat is the match can be called on account of rain, and Houston gets plenty of rain this time of year.

If you are interested in coming (to shoot or watch), please PM me so I can get a count of likely particpants, and give you directions. The range is about 30 miles South of Houston, off I-288.

BTW I cleared posting this invitation with Steve Smith (Thanks Steve!) - if anyone feels it is an inappropriate use of the forum, I apologise.

Purrrs,
BobCat
