Hi Folks,

When it rains, it pours. Eric Larsen just called me and asked me to post on his behalf. He just got his office back together after a plumbing leak, and now his computer has crashed - totally. His computer repair guy has informed him that his hard drive is totally toast due to some super virus, and cannot be repaired. He has a new CPU enroute, but it will not be set up until Monday or so.
To further complicate things, he has either lost, or someone has stolen his cell phone.
I've finally convinced him to stop being such a techno-whiz and just get a regular, old fashoned telephone that plugs into a land line. I'll be posting the number as soon as I hear back from him.
He's really concerned that his customers have been unable to reach him, and wants all of them to know what the problem is, and that he is working on it.
Thank you all for taking the time to read this. You will all now be returned to your regularly scheduled program....

Maybe he should take this opportunity of being incommunicado to quit taking new orders and catch up on a 9-12 month backlog.
One doesn't have to dig around long to find evidence that he didn't really respond to emails or voicemails anyway--

This also brings to mind another point: Taking payment months before work even begins on an order. If, heaven forbid, his whole shop had burnt down or he had had some other accident that would keep him from meeting his obligations.. how's he going to get people's money back? He's lost his livelyhood, records, etc.. leaving some very angry and very screwed people out there... bad practice.

Anyone who uses a computer, and especially for business, must make sure it is as secure as possible.
That includes at a minimum a top notch anti-virus, firewall that blocks outgoing as well as incoming (Windows XP firewall only blocks incoming traffic), an anti-malware program, and then be sure to keep all up-to-date including Windows.

Here is a site that is one of the best for computer security.

If you want to see the detection rates of various AVs go to
AV Comparatives and then to Comparatives.

The risk is too great to be careless, or lack knowledge of the threats and applications to block them.

Sorry to hear of Eric's trouble. Hopefully he will be able to recover all data, and get on with holster making.

Regards,
Jerry

That's not good to hear. FWIW I've never had any problems contacting Eric, except once where I found a link to an old E-mail. All of my calls have always been returned.

Hope you get everything back in order there Eric.
