I was doing some 8x57 Mauser loading today for my K98 and decided to give the 196 Grain Hornady Spire points a try. In looking at the COL it states 3.250. When I seat them down to where the top of the case is just barely touching the cannelure it's at 3.025. If I was to seat the bullets at 3.250 then the bullet would really be hanging out of the neck. . . ????? I looked at my Norma Manual just to compare with similiar weight bullets and it doesn't list a COL on a bullet by bullet basis it just gives the SAAMI Max COL (which happens to be 3.250)

So . . . did Hornady screw up or ??

I could see if the .323 bullets were used in a wide variety of rifles how the cannelure could be in the wrong place . . . . .but I can't see that there are all that many rifles that would use a .323 bullet. (or am I wrong)

I just checked the errata sticker that came with my 7th edition. There is no correction on it for 8x57.

I have a box of 8mm Hornady ammo on the shelf using the 195gr bullet. It is seated to the cannelure and measures 3.022

An Accurate manual I have shows a max cartridge length of 3.23".
The same manual shows a 200 grain loading seated to 2.99".

An old IMR book shows a 200 grain Speer seated to 3.13".

A 200 grain military round laying here is 3.165"

A new Winchester 170 grain round measures 3.025"

Now you got me wondering. I just started loading 8mm myself.

seat it where you're comfortable and forget the cannelure. most of my bullets are seated well beyond book max, regardless of chambering.

in the 8x57, i like 175 sierras seated long, and h-380.

in relatively common 8mm cartridges in the u.s. is 8 rem mag, 325 wsm, and 8x57.

I wish there was an email address for Hornady Customer service. (if there IS one I couldn't find it anywhere on their website). I think if I seated it to the COL in their manual I wouldn't have much bullet in the neck of the case. I guess I'll shoot the 15 I have loaded and see how they do and then adjust outward accordingly.

Thanks guys!

a) The magazine box on a VZ24 is too short for that.
I have milled them out to fit 3.34" cartridges, like the 30-06 or 300 Win Mag.
b) 1903 Turks were already milled out longer in 1938 to convert from 7.65x53 to 8x57.
c)But commercial Mausers have 3.34" mag boxes. (probably what the employee at Hornady was issued)
d) You can buy longer mag boxes:
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/catsearch.aspx?c=3252&p=4816
You might have to relieve the stock a little to get it to fit.

Seating the bullet out longer may help reach the throat for accuracy and fit more powder, but it may also not fit in the mag or loose the bullet in the throat upon unfired ejection.
