Hiyo All
I am soon to be escaping to North Carolina at the end of the year and would appreciate any info on the present gun laws there. Like? Are you still able to get AR15's? AK's? Receivers and if an AK pistol needs/should be "Registered"?
Along with special permits to have and buy handguns. Yes, leaving California for a nicer bike filled life.

If you want really good gun laws, keep on going until you reach Florida. Yes, NC is better than CA but you still have to get permits to buy from the Sheriff or get your pretty-much-worthless CCW so you can forego the purchase permits. AK, AR15s, etc are all fine her--so far. We need to get a Republican stronghold in the state government...something I am told is next to impossible.

Welcome!

What city/county are you going to be relocating to?

"Are you still able to get AR15's?"

Yes

"AK's?"

Yes

"Receivers and if an AK pistol needs/should be "Registered"?"

If you mean SBRs, yes with Sheriff signoff, some don't like to sign (not really registered though) just the ATF form/tax to get one.

If you're gonna get into EBRs heavy when you get here I would suggest heading over to http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=8&f=34 and check in.

"special permits to have and buy handguns."

Sorta. Have to have either a purchase permit or a CCW, but those both take the place of the NICS check. So when you go to buy a pistol, you can leave with it the same day you buy it.

hey TarpleyG!
why you sending people down here:cuss:
it would be better if these political refugeees from Cali and NY would go to other states. that way they can create more gun friendly states for other regugess to go to:)

If you are referring to a pistol that is the AK type but is listed as a pistol. The answer is no as it is bought and possesed as a regular hand gun. BTW where are you planning to relocate to?

If you want NFA items, check out the county you live in. EZ for me to get CLEO sign off here, next to impossible for my brother in Orange County. I understand CLEO won't sign off in Wake County either.

n.c. is decent thus far, but remember , the east coast commie triangle is there, based mainly around the college campuses. raleigh/ durham, fayetteville , and especially around Duke univ. they try to indoctrinate as many of the college kids as possible around there, and they do a damn fine job. then the local dems try to send them on to local/state govmnt.

UNBELIEVEABLE!

I wouldn't believe it if I didn't hear it from a LEO myself.

At least in Brunswick County, NC, (maybe all of NC)... If you don't have a CCW permit, your handgun must be kept on the dash of your vehicle, or somwhere where the LEO can see it if he pulls you over. No asking if you're carrying and you volunteer the info, they literally want you to ride around town with the handgun on your dash.

We do a lot of shooting at my friend's farm in Tabor City, NC, and he always told me to pout my gun on the dash. I never believed him, I just thought he was pulling my leg. Well a NC Sheriff's office deputy came by my store the other day, so I asked him the truth, and he reiterated what my friend told me. Crazy, but true! (unless they're both lying to me, and i'm caught in some VRWC)

I carried my P220 that way for a while. CCW is better of course, but I never was asked anything about it. A few comments, even one "wanna trade", but no problems. Don't try it with an M-4:D

Hank: Let me give you the straight deal on the gun on dash thing. The law says that you can carry in the car without any problem as long as its in plain view. The main point is PLAIN VIEW, and what better location is the dash board. As a LEO myself for 30 years here in NC I can tell you even if the gun is on a dashborad it can be overlooked. I know because it happened to me. The driver brought it to my attention, spooked the hell out of me:eek: I have told people keep it on the passenger seat and if you get pulled for some reason you can opt to put it on the dash or leave it on the seat but be sure to tell the officer first thing. He may and probably will seize it until he is finished with you, That was the practice for me anyway.

Cali Escapee

Thanks all for sharing. :) I was looking to see what I was getting myself into and it's much better than I thought. Though I will leave the Gators and Hurricanes to those in Florida. Charlotte is the place my wife and I have decided on. Either North or East with maybe a little South. Depending on where WE find a house. And someplace a little more relaxed and nice to start my little family. Hopefully, I can find a job there where my 8 years of "Pro E" experience benefits me.
My guns are being toned down a little and was worried that I might have problems bringing them with me. Like my DW445, L1A1 and AR10. My Motorcycles right now are my main money suckers. Custom '81 GS1100, Turbo '83 1100 Katana and am still wanting a newer GSXR1000 to Turbo also.
And am considering getting another "Hobby" of brewing up my own Beer in my Garage.
I will still have to get a CCW Permit though. Just in case I do want to buy something, as I am lusting after one of those AR15 lowers in Carbon Fiber. I don't really foresee myself getting any more toys but wonder about having a gun sliding around on my dash. And on a bike, I would probably need a CCW to carry. Would I need the permit to buy ammo or any reloading stuff too?
The registration would apply to one of those "Home Built" AK Pistols from a bunch of pieces and bent steel receivers too? As how as there wouldn't be any numbers on them?
And do you think there would be any problems if I slung my 10 over my shoulder and strapped my ammo to my luggage rack as I went to go shooting on my bike?
There are good stores to by ammo and reloading stuff in Charlotte?
I think join a gun club too.
Thanks Again for sharing all the imformation.

N.C is a great state to live in, the gun laws are ok as others have already said above. The gun shows in Charlotte used to be really good, but as of late they have left alot to be desired! lots of good gun shops in N.C. though! The only thing i wish N.C. would adopt that kansas has is the no gun permit, to buy handguns. i like this alot and once i move back home it will be hard for me to walk into a store and i will have forgot all about having a permit! but i will get over it i am sure, after a time or two.

Charlotte is the place my wife and I have decided on
I am from concord which is just right outside of charlotte, and have spent a lot of time there you will enjoy it.

there is a gun shop in Charlotte called Hyatt's and by us in the know about it's prices it is "Highdollar hyatt's". they have a great shop with lots of weapons but high prices. i normally go there just to see everything, and to see what's new!

If you move to Charlotte, you're way too close to real riding to waste a Gixxer 1000 as a dragdaddy;you'll have the best roads in the US a couple hours away.Keep the wheelbase short and get some good curve:neener:

Regarding legality and what is in plain sight:it's up to the officer.I know someone who was tried and convicted of carrying a concealed weapon because a rifle was in the open hatchback area of his car and the hatch was (legally) darkly tinted. There are so many restrictions on where one can CCW in NC that I never bothered, always just kept a pistol on the dash and locked it up due to it being unlawful in so many places:at a parade,in a bank (who'd ever want to rob one of those?),most malls and shopping centers.People don't believe me that between having to file for purchase permits and the waiting period the Sheriff required as well as the limits of where one can carry that MA is more handgun friendly but it's my experience.Of course,Char-Meck isn't the most gun friendly place in NC and I'm in a much friendlier than avg. area for the NE but as always, location, location, location.

Yup, I know about Deals Gap already but I am a Turbo nut and believe all should be boosted. Oh, No DragD for me. Gotta handle even with 300 horses and a short wheelbase.
I am just looking into options and wonder about the CCW too. I will worry about all that when I get there. As long as I can bring my toys, I should be fine.
I am sure I will enjoy Charlotte too!
Just gotta find the right place.
Thanks
GREG

I wasn't aware that you needed a permit to buy a pistol in NC. I live in PA and that concept seems foreign. Do they do anything special when you get that permit? I know they run you through NICS at the store so what more could they want?

What more could they want??

They want the $5 or more that it costs for each one. One required for each pistol. You can buy a dozen when you go in, but pay for each.
As for the open carry in car, it is crazy IMO. Yes, it is in plain view, but in easy reach and unless the cop immediately takes you at gunpoint, it is very dangerous for the officer IMO.
Florida requires that it not be easily accessible. If a bad guy goes for one, it will take a bit longer. Seems better to me.

Looks a bit thougher than we have it in Georgia, but certainly better than South Carolina, which I'd advise you to avoid. They don't accept other states' permits (NC does), and when business took me there a couple of years back, I was very, very careful.

In your case, it looks like getting the CCW is your best bet. The good part is, once you're in the South, your permit's good in most adjoining states.

Say, hankdatank, what's the quote in your sig from? Sounds very familiar.

The laws here aren't bad if you have a CCW permit. The most annoying things are (1) you can't carry to any restaurant that serves alcohol, even if you are a teetotaler, (2) good shooting ranges are few and far between in the eastern part of the state, and (3) carry in National Forests is subject to lots of regulations predicated on the assumption that if you carry a pistol on your person, you will be tempted to poach deer. The rest of it is pretty good.

NC is a pretty good place to own and carry a gun. I guess Ive been blessed by living in the country just west of Charlotte. I get to shoot when I want to at my range behind my house.
There's some good gun shops around. Hyatt's in Charlotte is a big shop with big prices. There are other shops in surrounding towns that have a good selection of guns at better prices. You can find some good deals at the gun shows.
Some of the CCW laws are kind of crazy. There's just too many places and times you can't carry such as resturants that serve alcohol, any government property, any place that charges an admission, parades, funerals, businesses or other places that posts a sign that says no weapons allowed, school property, churches and lots more.
It could be worse though. You're lucky you're not moving to Mass. or NY

There's just too many places and times you can't carry such as . . . churches
Not true. I often see this mentioned when people decry the restrictions imposed on carrying in North Carolina. There are several, but there is no prohibition against carry in churches in this state.

Here is the list of prohibited carry locations, with the corresponding reference to the North Carolina General Statutes.

*Schools, public or private, all levels including universities. §14-269.2

*Assemblies and establishments where admission was charged. §14-269.3

*Assemblies and establishments where alcohol is both sold and consumed. §14-269.3

* State Buildings: State Capitol Building, the Executive Mansion, the Western Residence of the Governor, or on the grounds of any of these buildings, and any building housing any court of the General Court of Justice. §14-269.4

* State office buildings or any portion of a building in which there are State offices. §14-415.11(c)

*Law Enforcement or Correctional Facilities. §14-415.11(c)

*Financial Institutions. §14-415.11(c)

*Events Occurring in Public: It shall be unlawful for any person participating in, affiliated with, or present as a spectator at any parade, funeral procession, picket line, or demonstration upon any private health care facility or upon any public place owned or under the control of the State or any of its political subdivisions to willfully or intentionally possess or have immediate access to any dangerous weapon. §14-277.2

*Areas of emergencies or riots. §14-288.7

*Where notice of carrying a concealed handgun is prohibited by the posting of a conspicuous notice or statement. §14-415.11(c)

" WOW " All the way from the other corner, for the same reason that I came to TENNESSEE , last month.. From NEW YORK.... Bought my First hand gun, without being treated like a TERRORIST in the making. Good luck in NC.

varies by county. Some limit you to five at a time, others dont. I dont know about Buncombe, I never got more than one at a time. It slowed the impulse buys down quite a bit.

Yes, it is in plain view, but in easy reach and unless the cop immediately takes you at gunpoint, it is very dangerous for the officer IMO.
I had two interaction with LEOs while a handgun was laying in my seat. One was an accident scene. He noticed my .38 sitting in the console, but didnt say anything about it. Even after he sent me to the car to look for proof of insurance.

The other time, I got stopped for speeding. After I informed the officer that I was armed, and my handgun was laying in my passenger side seat, he simply had me step out of the car and lean against my trunk for the duration of the stop. Didnt even run the numbers on the pistol. I know this because he didnt take it out of the car. The only thing that wasnt routine about the stop was the fact that he told me to wait untill after he pulled out before I got back in my car.

I also been stopped numerous times with a weponcase in the back seat, or a scattergun in my trunk, and the fact that I had a firearm in the car was no big deal, this was before I had my carry permit.

IME, having a gun in the car, without a CHP, is no big deal. Oddly enough, not having a gun in the car, and having my CHP, has been. If you get your CHP, be sure to inform the officer even if youre not armed.
