If you move to the Charlotte area at all, get a CWP. Several reasons.
NC's law about car transpo is vague w/out CWP, cops have been known, especially in CharMeck or other metros to take your weapon and you catch a charge for things you don't think about, like someone said, a guy in my CWP class caught a charge for having it (unloaded mind you) on the dash, claiming his windows were tinted and therefore concealed the gun, even though he rolled down the windows when he got pulled over, and could be seen through the windshield etc.
Plus, in Charlotte, you're way close to the SC border, you may have cause to cross the border frequently. SC and NC car laws are very different (w/out permit). SC says it must be in a closed compartment (console/glovebox), and as others have said, the general law in NC is to be out in the open. Myself, I go back and forth across the line a few times a day, it's like the parkay/butter argument in my car (if you're old enough to understand that reference) w/ my console opening and closing, which is ridiculous (so the states in question would rather have me handling my firearm while driving to remove and replace it from the console as I go back and forth, rather than just letting me leave it in the console, yeah that's safer).
Before I owned a firearm, I must admit, I think I was lulled to sleep a little when I would hear a media report about someone, sometimes a well known celebrity, catching a weapons charge, they always say it w/ a tone that implies guilt, and leaves a negative connotation in the viewer's mind. I had no idea how easy it would be for the law abiding citizen to catch a charge on a technicality, in their own state, let alone in another state.
Anyway, I say CWP is the way to go. I just sent my completed app off the other day.
Housing and Jobs may dictate where you want to live. I think most people plan where they want to live based on where they want to work. It can take you a long time to get from point A to point B if you don't choose wisely. IMO, while Union County has nice parts, traffic out 74 E can get pretty hairy. After living in CharMeck for several years, we recently moved across the line into SC, still about 15 minutes from downtown. Easy highway access. Good schools for little ones. I don't know about ARs and all that, I do frequent the ar15.com board and they have a 'hometown' section, I think someone recommended that board to you, they can probably help on some county specific stuff in either state.
I do like NC's CWP as it has more reciprocity w/ other states, but NC/SC are reciprocol regardless. Living here now, I went for the SC, which doesn't cover me in GA/FL, at least not yet. At some point I'll investigate a non resident FL permit for more coverage.
I do like SC's castle doctrine, in your car and in your home, seems better than NC's. And if you're legal in your actions, they have strong language in SC protecting you from being sued by somoone or their family. I am not a lawyer, do your own research.
If you like shooting pistols, and want to practice in more real world stages, I shoot w/ a club, you can find them on the idpa.com site, under clubs in Rock Hill, SC, people from upstate SC and the Charlotte area shoot w/ them. They shoot at an indoor range across the line in SC during the week, and practice and have matches at an outdoor range in Gaston county on weekends.
As far as I know, at the time of this writing, the Rock Hill (SSW of Charlotte) range is $120 yr single, $140 yr family, unlimited range time, or pay by the hour (least expensive in the area), I joined this one. Then there's Shooter's Express, off 85 on NW side near Gaston county, they're around $200 yr (or pay hrly) good rental selection, and have an indoor long gun range, and they do a lot of AR stuff. Firepower in Matthews is pay hourly only, no memberships, nice people, decent rental selection. Out towards Monroe/Indian Trail (ESE of Charlotte) is Bullet Hole, I've driven by there, but they were closed, couldn't tell you much about them. There's also Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club, one of those more closed memberships, but not impossible to get in. There's a guy on the AR board that got a bunch of people to go in on a group membership in Statesville at a place called Shooters (not same as previously mentioned Shooter's Express), and they're all into ARs and what not, but that's pretty far north for me on the S side.
For me, I got a lot out of IDPA, so I went to the less expensive range where they practiced and got the annual membership. Then, joining the shooting club, I can access their outdoor range, which will have long guns soon.
Hope that helps.
