Escaping to North Carolina - Gun Laws there?

I wasn't aware that you needed a permit to buy a pistol in NC
yep, and after being in kansa were there isn't a requirement for a permit to buy, it is like wow what is the point ya know!

"Looks a bit thougher than we have it in Georgia, but certainly better than South Carolina, which I'd advise you to avoid. They don't accept other states' permits (NC does), and when business took me there a couple of years back, I was very, very careful.

In your case, it looks like getting the CCW is your best bet. The good part is, once you're in the South, your permit's good in most adjoining states."

SC does indeed have reciprocity with several other states. Not nearly as many as it should be, but there are a few SC recognize.

Charlotte is the place my wife and I have decided on. Either North or East with maybe a little South.

South of Charlotte is SC. . North is Iredell County, East of CLT is Union or Cabarrus Counties, west is Gaston or Lincoln Counties. Google 'em and see what you think. I myself live and work in Iredell Co.

Would I need the permit to buy ammo or any reloading stuff too?
The registration would apply to one of those "Home Built" AK Pistols from a bunch of pieces and bent steel receivers too? As how as there wouldn't be any numbers on them?

Not as far as I know. . you just can never sell it. . has to do with federal laws.

And do you think there would be any problems if I slung my 10 over my shoulder and strapped my ammo to my luggage rack as I went to go shooting on my bike?

By ten do you mean 10 gage? More a man then I am. . .

NC has an interesting law called "Going Armed to the Terror of the People" Basicly it's when you display a weapon on a public highway. Better to put it in the car when you go to the range

There are good stores to by ammo and reloading stuff in Charlotte?

Hyatt's is good, they have everything, but a bit price IMHO. They jsut opened up a Gander Mountian in Mooresville and they have an impressive reloading area and a decent selection of firearms. . very much hunting orientated but other stuff too. Some Milsurp handguns in the display case.

I think join a gun club too.

Good idea probibly. There are a few around and the Rowan County Wildlife Association up in Salisbury is CMP affiliated and has matches. FOP has a range here in Iredell too but you have to be a member. . . still there are events open to the public held htere. . glock matches and SASS mathces come to mind. There are some morons to be found at various ranges etc. Went shooting at another (unamed here) shooting range and the guy behind the counter was not only a lieing-mall-ninja-since-the-age-of-six, but a-very-bad-at-lieing-mall-ninja-since-the-age-of-six . . liek all things, gotta take the good with the bad and there are some really great people to be met at the clubs and ranges in the area. The kind that say "Ever shoot one of these? Give it a whirl!"

Good luck on the move. Just stay out of Charlotte itself. Mecklenburg County is a law unto itself in all reguards and the taxes are too daggon high. Stay out of Gastonia city. Gaston county is pretty nice esp in the mroe rural areas but Gastonia is kinda rough.

it's a lingering "Jim crow" law. the purchase permit system was created to prevent african-americans from having easy legal access to handguns.

it lingers now, mainly because it provides an additional source of income to the individual Sheriff's Departments, and what LE agency do YOU know if that will willingly give up a source of income/funding.
in otherwords the permit system started in NC as a racist law, and continues b/c it's too good of a source of "money for next to nothing" for the various agencies to let go of without a fight.

At $5 a piece I can hardly call it a money maker. In my county, that barely covers the time of the nice young lady in the office who does the background check. They are good for 5 years and also work as an "instant check" for when you buy a rifle at the gun show. What ever the law's history, it certainly serves a valid purpose in this day and age of backgorund checks and the like. It certainly helps makes a record of strawmen.

Well, I got loads of Info now. :) I think to get a CCW just to have.
Actually I was talking about slinging my AR10 and go out riding to the range. But now that you bring up a 10 gauge, i'll have to think about getting one of those since I am selling my Mossy 9200.
I have heard of Gander Mountain before so once the house and job are done, I'll be a shopping.
Thanks all for the info.:)

Don't move to mecklenburg county if you have kids and are sending them to public schools.Any of the surrounding counties would be cheaper tax wise.
I've lived here all my life and Charlotte is not the place it used to be. Joe

Thankyou for clearing that up Clyde. :)

PS: Hey Pistones, the guy I was telling you about from Tabor Ciy, NC whose backyard we go shooting at has a 2004 GSX-R 1000 for sale. Chrome 3 point rims, TI Force exhaust, Chromed Adjustable swingarm, air shifters, undertail kit, flush mount turn indicators, and I believe some motor work. PM me for the specifics if you're interested.

DONT MOVE TO THE GREAT STATE OF MECKLENBURG, TOO MANY HASSLES IN LIVING THERE. THE TRAFFIC IS TERRIBLE THE ROADS ARE TERRIBLE AND THE TAXES ARE TERRIBLE. UNION COUNTY IS NOT BAD OR ANY COUNTY THAT SURROUNDS MECKLENBURG. BUT STAY OUT OF MECKLENBURG.:banghead:

I know I am resurrecting this thread from long ago, but now I am considering moving from Texas to Greensboro NC, and I was wondering how the Greensboro area is as far as hunting (deer and duck) and gun ranges? I appreciate any info.

I think to get a CCW just to have.

A couple years back NC passed a law so that a CCW permit is a valid substitute for a NICS check, and works in place of a pistol purchase permit. Even if you don't plan on carrying, it's great just for the purchasing convenience it provides.

Another CA refugee

I was in the same boat as you. Got out of Southern Cali just about a year ago and moved to Charlotte.
As you heard from a lot of people Charlotte/Mecklenburg County is on the expensive side taxes wise (almost as bad as CA for me anyway) so I will most likely be moving out of the city in the next year or so.
My biggest problem was finding a public rifle range that's not just an indoor pistol range where you can also shoot your rifle (25 yards). I found one about an hour away from my house in the Uwharrie National Forest. Overall we like NC a lot. Also me and the wife are getting our CCWs this month.

Good luck with the move.

If you move to the Charlotte area at all, get a CWP. Several reasons.

NC's law about car transpo is vague w/out CWP, cops have been known, especially in CharMeck or other metros to take your weapon and you catch a charge for things you don't think about, like someone said, a guy in my CWP class caught a charge for having it (unloaded mind you) on the dash, claiming his windows were tinted and therefore concealed the gun, even though he rolled down the windows when he got pulled over, and could be seen through the windshield etc.

Plus, in Charlotte, you're way close to the SC border, you may have cause to cross the border frequently. SC and NC car laws are very different (w/out permit). SC says it must be in a closed compartment (console/glovebox), and as others have said, the general law in NC is to be out in the open. Myself, I go back and forth across the line a few times a day, it's like the parkay/butter argument in my car (if you're old enough to understand that reference) w/ my console opening and closing, which is ridiculous (so the states in question would rather have me handling my firearm while driving to remove and replace it from the console as I go back and forth, rather than just letting me leave it in the console, yeah that's safer).

Before I owned a firearm, I must admit, I think I was lulled to sleep a little when I would hear a media report about someone, sometimes a well known celebrity, catching a weapons charge, they always say it w/ a tone that implies guilt, and leaves a negative connotation in the viewer's mind. I had no idea how easy it would be for the law abiding citizen to catch a charge on a technicality, in their own state, let alone in another state.

Anyway, I say CWP is the way to go. I just sent my completed app off the other day.

Housing and Jobs may dictate where you want to live. I think most people plan where they want to live based on where they want to work. It can take you a long time to get from point A to point B if you don't choose wisely. IMO, while Union County has nice parts, traffic out 74 E can get pretty hairy. After living in CharMeck for several years, we recently moved across the line into SC, still about 15 minutes from downtown. Easy highway access. Good schools for little ones. I don't know about ARs and all that, I do frequent the ar15.com board and they have a 'hometown' section, I think someone recommended that board to you, they can probably help on some county specific stuff in either state.

I do like NC's CWP as it has more reciprocity w/ other states, but NC/SC are reciprocol regardless. Living here now, I went for the SC, which doesn't cover me in GA/FL, at least not yet. At some point I'll investigate a non resident FL permit for more coverage.

I do like SC's castle doctrine, in your car and in your home, seems better than NC's. And if you're legal in your actions, they have strong language in SC protecting you from being sued by somoone or their family. I am not a lawyer, do your own research.

If you like shooting pistols, and want to practice in more real world stages, I shoot w/ a club, you can find them on the idpa.com site, under clubs in Rock Hill, SC, people from upstate SC and the Charlotte area shoot w/ them. They shoot at an indoor range across the line in SC during the week, and practice and have matches at an outdoor range in Gaston county on weekends.

As far as I know, at the time of this writing, the Rock Hill (SSW of Charlotte) range is $120 yr single, $140 yr family, unlimited range time, or pay by the hour (least expensive in the area), I joined this one. Then there's Shooter's Express, off 85 on NW side near Gaston county, they're around $200 yr (or pay hrly) good rental selection, and have an indoor long gun range, and they do a lot of AR stuff. Firepower in Matthews is pay hourly only, no memberships, nice people, decent rental selection. Out towards Monroe/Indian Trail (ESE of Charlotte) is Bullet Hole, I've driven by there, but they were closed, couldn't tell you much about them. There's also Charlotte Rifle and Pistol Club, one of those more closed memberships, but not impossible to get in. There's a guy on the AR board that got a bunch of people to go in on a group membership in Statesville at a place called Shooters (not same as previously mentioned Shooter's Express), and they're all into ARs and what not, but that's pretty far north for me on the S side.

For me, I got a lot out of IDPA, so I went to the less expensive range where they practiced and got the annual membership. Then, joining the shooting club, I can access their outdoor range, which will have long guns soon.

Hope that helps.

there is a gun shop in Charlotte called Hyatt's and by us in the know about it's prices it is "Highdollar hyatt's". they have a great shop with lots of weapons but high prices. i normally go there just to see everything, and to see what's new!

Isn't that the truth. I think the cheapest Springfield 03 I saw in there the last time I was in was well over a $1000. Is there a gunshop thats not so expensive in the northern Charlotte, and Iredell county region? I never been able to really find one that doesn't want to bankcrupt you.

I perfer the Hickory gunshows to Charlotte still.

One problem I found in my area is a lack of ranges. Especially in Charlotte itself. The police around here do get kind of annoying about the concealed handgun license as Zach S has said. The handgun permit to buy one or even give it to a friend or family member though is just plain daft. A way to make a little extra money is all it comes down too.

Oh and no matter howlong I lived in the US, those in the eastern mountains do not speak English. Its some strange jibba jabba and they will come out and knock on your window when having sex in the car. Don't ask me how I know this.

I live in NC and shoot out back all the time. With lots of stuff. Nothing illegal mind you, but a lot of stuff. I find its a great place, with occasional raids of people who have the assault flare launching grenade tube weapon of mass destruction (which is legal also).

I'm from NC, they're gun friendly. you can drive around with a gun on your dashboard. they don't like you to hide it in the cab(good reason for ccp). lock it in the trunk while shopping. //yes they make you get a $5 purchase permit from the police to buy a pistol. silly but fast

One thing to note is that the local sheriff has an amazing amount of power in NC - amzznig at least for somone who didn't grow in the South. In the Old South, the sheriff was the most imporant man in the county - and the New South is still in many ways the Old South.

When the sheriff changed in Wake County, the entire procedure for getting handgun purchase permits changed (for the better in my opinion). The local sheriff may or may not give you more than one pistol permit at a time (I think the limit in Wake County is 5 per appication). I had a friend who lived somewhere else, and the sheriff there decided he would give you one pistol permit. If you wanted another one, you had to show him that you'd sold the pistol you bought with the first one.

Sheriffs have a lot of power in the South.

haha, that's where I got my very first gun from. I'll never forget that. Small world!

______________

Hope you enjoy NC if you come here. I like it, but I'm biased, it's home...

Quick question...I am a student at NC State but live in San Antonio. I am about to turn 21 and am going to get my CHP in Texas. When I get that will I be able to purchase a pistol in North Carolina? Right now I cant even go into a sporting goods store and get a shotgun but I didnt know if having my CHP would make a difference.

Come to Ohio. We're not too far gone, yet, though the carry permit is almost but not entirely useless. No pistol permit to purchase, open carry almost everywhere, and I hear the hunting is good. We need some more pro-gun people to keep it sane and maybe make it better.

Lived in NC for ten years, it isn't too bad for guns but with Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham don't look for it to stay that way long. Finally escaped a few years ago, for guns MS is great!
