Even quieter .22

I am just about to get a Ruger Mark II or III. I was considering swapping the barrel out for one with an integrated silencer. Basically, looking for something with virtually no noise without spending so much on it.

I have two questions. Will supersonic .22lr ammo still be fairly noisy with a can? Would it be worth it to find another pistol that will handle .22 short/cb?

I have a fair bit of .22lr socked away at the moment and have a 10/22. I would rather not have an extra caliber, but if it would make a decent amount of difference I am not completely opposed to the idea. I want to be able to pull the trigger and hear nothing but the action cycling and the bullet hitting the target, if that is achievable.

And, I will probably do this in stages, get the pistol first and then get the can/barrel next spring.

honestly, with a suppressed mark 3......the only real noise you are gonna hear is from the action cycling.

With a short pistol barrel, supersonic ammunition will likely be subsonic. I have a thread around here somewhere with chrono numbers from 4" and 5.5" barrels with supersonic ammunition, I'll try to find it for you. EDIT: Here it is.

Basically, most supersonic ammo will be subsonic from a 4" or less barrel. With a 5.5" barrel, most shots will be subsonic with an occasional bullet going supersonic. I went with a Ruger MKIII 22/45 with a 4" barrel and threaded it for a detachable suppressor.

I did the same as lions. My suppressor is for my ar15, but works very well on my 22/45. It is pretty quiet and cycles perfectly with 22lr ammo. The 22 short cbs are where you only hear the action cycle, but it only works as a single shot because of the gun.

You can actually get .22 shorts to at least fire in the Ruger? I thought they would be too, well, short to feed into the barrel correctly. Is that not the case?

Lions, thanks for that link to the velocity stuff you did. Looks like with a short barrel it will barely be supersonic. With a can this thing should be really quiet then.

I've tried loading a Ruger mag with .22 shorts, they do not feed reliably and I could only get 4 or 5 in there before they started shifting to an improper orientation.

If you want to keep tabs on supersonic and subsonic you have to realize that the speed of sound changes with regard to temperature. The speed of sound is slower in colder temperatures and faster in warmer temperatures. Here is a good calculator to use.

They fire fine in the Ruger. Just drop one in the chamber and close the action. They don't even come close to cycling it, but they are very quiet. I haven't tried to put them in the magazine, but I am guessing they will just jam it up.

They make subsonic .22LR ammo. Use that.

CB shorts from a 22" bolt gun.
All you hear is the firing pin and the impact
No suppressor required.

i wish CB longs would cycle my MKIII'S......CB'S out of my pump or bolt gun are very quite......my crossman 760 is louder at 10 pumps!!!!

I recently got my first can and put it on a buckmark. At the indoor range with hearing protection and subsonic's it was very quiet. Tried it outside without hearing protection and I was surprised that it was actually fairly loud. Would strongly recommend a suppressor that can be disassembled for a .22 as it's pretty dirty at the end of the day. Suppressors are great fun.

Not the poster you asked the question of but I use the same in a Mossberg 146 and have similar results. Report is close to a pellet rifle. Any .22 bolt with a long barrel is ideal. The CZ 452 Trainer I think it is has a 28" barrel and should be just about perfect.
