hello,
I was curious if anyone purposely buys a handgun knowing that they will sell it later.

I am on the fence about purchasing a walther p99. my problem is I want it. However, the P99 is ridiculously expensive for similar types of handguns. Sure, only by 100-200 dollars compared to glocks, springfields, and all the others...but still.

Knowing it would drop probably 100-150 in resale if I keep it perfect, I am okay with that if I ever had to sell it. I am not cash strapped, but the idea of 700 dollars in just a 'want' for anything is a bit showy.

What say you, to buy a want knowing you can get most of it back when resold, or no go?

No.

But I have bought a "want" knowing I can get more for it than I paid for it.

All of them will be traded or sold eventually, or given away, the heirlooms will be transfered to family. I never bought a gun thinking of it becoming an heirloom. They are just machinery.
I do have my fathers branding irons however and will pass them on to niece or nephew.

Since I'm not a licensed dealer, no, I don't dabble in the firearms trade. I only buy guns that I intend to keep.
Why give the ATF any reason to sniff around?

I for one can't imagine thinking about selling either of the two P99s that I own. It's a great handgun and most definitely a keeper. :)

I would NOT buy a firearm with the intention of playing with it and then selling it later. Some guns are range toys, and some are serious business SD guns, and someday there might be a collector's item safe queen (unlikely, though) ... but the only time to sell a gun off is if you decide that it was a poor choice in the first place.
If you want a P99 on a budget, get an ugly used one with holster wear.

I've bought a Sig P232 SL. Its the second for me and because I got a great deal on it I bought it with the thought I could sell it later or use for trade material.

i fearlessly predict that you will want to keep the p99 once you use it.

unless it is a .40 or a qa or a dao

Yes I bought a Ruger super redhawk in .480 Ruger at an auction with resale on my mind... took 6 years to make a profit on it. Right now the only firearm that you could expect to profit on are Colts. Recent events and price increases will not continue at current levels... at least not until the next Presidential election, if B. O. gets reelected the panic of "08" will seem like a pleasant memory.

Nope, but that is what usually ends up happening (in favor of a temporarily cooler gun). I know I've got a problem and I'm trying to stop!

If you don't mind potentially wasting you money go right ahead and give into your frivolous desires. Just try be sure that you really, really want it, currently more than any other gun.

I used to do that a lot..... but I live in CA and I learned a hard lesson back in the 90's. I buy as mush as I can and keep it. Looks like I'll have to start doing the same with ammo to some extent.
