Before some of you jump to conclusions:
Neither the state nor local cops here have any problem with civilian owned machine guns. There are two class III dealers here, we have machinegun shoots etc. and its all good.
The police gun was an m-16 (reporters around here know their guns). I don't mind the cops here having mgs. There's not that much crime around here, but there is a heck of a lot of civilian firepower.

Ex-policeman faces federal charges for city armed robbery
A two-count federal indictment was returned yesterday against a former Manchester police officer, charging him with using a machine gun to rob Fleet Bank on Brown Avenue.
U.S. Attorney Tom Colantuono announced that a grand jury sitting in U.S. District Court in Concord yesterday returned the indictment against Gary Sahlin, 26, of Pompano Beach, Fla.
Sahlin is charged with armed bank robbery and using a 5.56- caliber machine gun to rob the bank.
He will be arraigned on the indictment at 3 p.m. today before Magistrate Judge James Muirhead in federal court.
Sahlin is charged with the Aug. 6 robbery of Fleet Bank, 2626 Brown Ave., Manchester, in which $24,000 was taken.
Authorities said Sahlin stole a police cruiser from the downtown station, parked it behind Beijing Cuisine, next to the bank, and used the department-issued machine gun, which was in the trunk, to rob the bank.
Sahlin then allegedly drove to the police station and parked the cruiser outside it. He then went to a downtown hotel room, packaged up the cash and mailed it at the post office on Goffe’s Falls Road on his way to Manchester Airport, where he caught a flight to Florida.
Police said they identified Sahlin as the suspected bank robber within 24 hours of the heist and had him in custody within 32 hours.
Sahlin was a Manchester police dispatcher before joining the department in July 2000. His employment was terminated in December 2002, after he was charged with assaulting his wife the previous month.
The assault and other charges, however, were ultimately dropped after Sahlin pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct as part of a plea agreement.
The bank robbery was investigated by offices of the FBI in Bedford and Miami, Manchester police, the U.S. Postal Service and the Broward County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Department.
