Hi all, and thanks for having me!

I am just starting reloading and am on my first batch of .223 to be used in a Ruger M77 II.

My question is this: Books all say that cartridge overall length max is 2.26". After setting up to keep the bullet just off the lands, I came out with a COAL of 2.28".

Is this .02 going to be a problem? And am I doing right by seating the bullet just off the lands?

Many thanks in advance.

Yes you should be fine.

Even if they touch the lands as long as you adjusted the powder charge down for the increased pressure, you would be ok.

Each rifle has it own sweet spot as far a bullet seating length. It may be .020 or .002 off the lands.

I am assuming that they fit the magazine ok?

I have never reloaded a cartridge that was equal or less than that spec :)

Somehow, I suspect there are bullets, that being too far out of the neck to reach lands, might as well be set into the neck to meet the COL spec. Thinking it will at least give the proper pressures when fired. Just did that last evening with some 40gr bullets in a .222

Hopefully, someone can expand upon that.

You will be fine.

It would be best if they fit the mag, unless you don't mind single loading. Just off the lands might shoot great, but .040 off the lands may be what your rifle likes with that bullet. Never can tell. Gotta test em.

Some here think loading into the lands creates excess pressure. I am not one of them. The bullet has to hit the lands sometime.

I have a cast bullet load for my 14 inch Contender 7TCU that's seated out so far the gas check and the first lube ring is all that is in the neck (about 1/8"). I have to snap the action closed, but it's sub MOA.
