Just for fun...

Suppose you won a contest and the prize is that you can have any hunt you want. You pick any one game animal, any one time period, any one place in the world, any one method, and any one type of weapon - anything you want.

What would your hunt be ?

Mine would be a hunt on horseback for American Bison south of the Black Hills, circa 1870 - a la the buffalo hunt in "Dances with Wolves" - and I would use a short Osage bow.

Let's hear 'em, Y'All ! :)

mule deer, today, badlands of s.d., rifle.

wait... i do that every year... does that mean i'm living the dream???

That would be one tough choice, but I'd probably go for Sulaiman Markhor in Pakistan. I'd definitely use a rifle, probably my .284 Jamison that was built for Ibex.

If you gave me a second choice, I'd likely pick Desert Bighorn so I'd have a GS--but wait, maybeso Altai Argali in Mongolia, except--I really would like to hunt Mountain Nyala in Ethiopia, but--mentioning Ethiopia, and if all is fair, then I sure would like to hunt the Abysinian Ibex there. I guess I'll stick with the Markhor, but a Bengal Tiger in India is sure tempting! I may have to think on this some more!

See, I'm more of a bird hunter than big game. To me, I'd rather be in the marsh putting out deeks before sun up than anywhere in the US chasing whitetail. Sorry, it's just me, I love wing shooting, never got that out of my system. I suppose it's because we have lots of good, in fact excellent, free or nearly free waterfowling down here and you have to have land to afford to deer hunt anymore. I have some land, but still prefer wing shooting.

So, to answer your question, for me, it'd be Argentina and doves. I saw a deal on Outdoor Channel the other day that keeps me thinking about Argentina doves. It was Tom Knapp down there shootin' doves. Wow, just continuous, non-stop action. God, now THAT is heaven on earth. :D I mean, if you did that every day, you really could wear out a shotgun a year! I'm not sure what shells cost down there, but I can't afford the airline tickets anyway, much less the lodge fee, so what does it matter? One day, though, I may just do the Argentina thing, just once, before I'm dead. It can be done for around 3K dollars I think, not THAT bad considering what big game in Africa and crap costs. They treat you right down there, too, from what I hear.

One other thing I'd like to do that's a lot more affordable is hunt pheasant in Dakotasin's part of the world, South Dakota. I've never shot a pheasant, don't have 'em this far south.

I think my son-in-law may be going on a great dangerous game hunt next year. Rumor is that his guard unit may be deployed to Afghanistan. Hunting Osama with a .50 would be pretty interesting, I think. Far more dangerous than anything that walks on all fours.

The good part? The gubment will pay for it all, even ammo and weapon.

I'm way too old for that sort of thing, but I ain't complaining. I think Argentina would be more fun, frankly, and a lot more friendly atmosphere.

if you've got the time, i'll show you the birds. c'mon up. late season is the most fun.

Combo hunt...

My hunt would be for Bull Elk and Mule Buck hunt in Montana, Utah or Wyoming. BUT only if I could take my father-in-law. Without him going it just would not mean much.

It is unfortunate but we probably will never get to experience this between us...He and I are getting older and we do not have too many years with which we could do it.

Stone sheep,1950's, Yukon Territory, .270 Winchester.
Month long, horseback, spike camps. Late August early September.

Yeah, mastadon or mammoth, me and my bow 10 or 20K years back. That'd be the ultimate hunt. Undecided on whether I'd want to use my recurve or compound. But a modern hunt for moose in rut or grizzly bear with my bow in the boonies of Canada would be almost as good - maybe a B.C. hunt.

Game - T.Rex
Gun - .577 T.Rex
Place - N. America
Time - Cretaceous period

Hmmm, that's pretty good too. Wait, I got it: T-Rex, bow, from a REALLY high tree stand.

I'd like to hunt one of these big-buck whitetail ranches--but about a week or two after the guides all quit and the owner went on vacation. Multi-thousand-acre pastures for walking-hunting and nobody around but me and a couple or four good friends. Campfire sessions are equally important...

AKCOP--Are you sure you want to go to the Yukon for Stone Sheep? Very few there, most are further south, in northern BC.

I guess just the chance to hear and see a king of the mountain 6x6 bull elk bugling up close and personal. I wouldn't even need to harvest him. That would be my thrill of a lifetime.

Caribou in the NWT, -20*F, My Rem. 700, 7mm RUM, And about 2 weeks, just me and my grandad.

Hunting isn't fun without him.

My good man from Alabama, have you ever been in -20F, or 0F for that matter? Long about 0 it really tends to loose it's novelty in a hurry!

Haha, not quite..... but I imagine that's about the temp up in the NWT. I could handle it a bit warmer though. Just so long as old Gramps is there, doesn't matter to me!
