Experience with the Savage 64

Hi Folks,
I am interested in peoples experience with the Savage 64, pros, cons, and just general satisfaction with this rifle. Any issues you may have seen with regard to the keyhole magazine, rounds jamming with a particular brand of ammo, or any other issue you might have seen, heard of or run across.

P.S. I realize everyone has a favorite 22 semi auto and this may not be yours. While I normally appreciate the advice and testimonials on the Ruger 10/22, Marlin 60 and any others that may be at the top of their favorites list, I'm really only asking for feedback on the Savage 64 if possible. I own this rifle, personally I love it. I got it when I turned 17 (Last October) But the only ammo I've had much luck with are the CCI Blazer .22LRs. I rarely have jams when using this ammo. It might be different for your rifle though. On the other hand, the gold tipped Remington hollow-points feed horribly, and usually jammed up my rifle quite a bit. Same with Federal. But other than that, I like mine a lot. I recently added a bit of stuff to it and plan to take it out for hunting soon.

Is that the...

64FXP with the 4x15 scope that comes with it or is that your own you added to it? So generally its the hollow points you are having trouble with?

My buddy has the same gun.....He has horrible luck with the Remington jacketed hollow points in the bulk box.....CCI blazers work great....My viper does the same...

Well I did it! I dropped a $120 and got one!

I really looks like a nice little rifle and I will run it through its paces in a couple of weeks. One thing that puzzles me a bit and I wonder if anyone has seen a similar issue. I put ten dummy rounds into the clip and tried manually cycling through all ten rounds but it wouldn't work on the first round. It seems to work fine when you have 6 or 7 rounds in the clip but its too tight in the first few and won't chamber the round. I haven't tried this with regular 22 live rounds, only with the dummy rounds. Anyone seem a similar issue with the clip?

i just picked mine up yesterday. it shoots great. i only tried federal and cci mini-mags. it fed all flawlessly. i shot almost 400 rounds.

I bought my Savage 64 used at a gunstore for $79 with a Bushnell 3-9x32 scope on it. Looked hardly shot at all. Picked up a bunch of new in wrap magazines from a THRer for a song. The rifle is very accurate, very reliable. It's as basic as it gets- black metal, black polymer furniture, black scope & rings. But it is a fun little plinker, works great for shooting varmints, and for the price I can't complain. I've never had any trouble with it.

Rosk, where did you get your bipod?

That looks pretty slick and I think I want one. I just picked up a Simmon 3-9x32 (Model .22 Mag) and I think that bipod would complement the scope I now have rather nicely.

Hi,
Friend of mine who is veteran and disabled purchased one and had jamming problems first time out. Said he wiped it down before shooting it. I brought it home and flushed it out, cleaned it, and very lightly oiled it. Put 3x9 air rifle scope on it and it proceeded to shoot ~.4-.6" at 25yds with no burps what so ever at 3x. Ran 4 different types of ammo. Great valuel.

it is a great rifle, but 1 thing bothers me about savage in general.
most other rifles, including 22's, can be taken down with a flathead screwdriver, or even a coin. the savage will require a allen wrench set. You carry those around with you?
also the stock is soft, and brittle at the same time. so keep the torque the same, about 20 lbs or less on the take down screws. Finally, put some band aid sized strips of aluminum tape, the the sides, front, back , and bottom of the stock where the receiver/action fit down into, or it will move around in there, whether you think it will or not. 3 layers of strips, max, on each of the sides should do it, try for only two, to see how snug it is, when it drops in.

Oh, another good thing are the mags, they are the thickest, solid steel mags you will ever find on a 22, or even most centerifires- so when you run out of ammo, and the zombies are coming at you, throw them as a weapon.
