I'm planning on getting either a 2nd or 3rd Model Dragoon soon. I like the look of the square-backed trigger guard better, but I have read some opinions that the rounded guard is more comfortable to shoot, especially with full loads. Does anyone who has actual experience shooting both guns have any words of wisdom to share?

I haven't fired a Dragoon but I have fired Super Blackhawks that have square-backed trigger guards. Definitely a painful experience that is to be avoided. (I opted for Pachmayer grips ASAP!)

There's a reason that old man Colt dropped the Dragoon trigger guard pattern... .

it's actually MORE comfortable on the Navy...of course the .36 doesn't qualify as a ''heavy recoiling revolver''.I never liked the look, but I'm getting used to it now.

Experience shooting both:

With the milder 'push' type recoil of these guns, even at full chamber loads I experienced no difficulty with the square trigger guard on the 2nd Model. I shot them both two-handed and 'duelist'. Two-handed was significantly better as the day went on, of course.

Don't worry about it

No problem as far as recoil goes.

Even Colt's biggest and baddest - the Walker and the Dragoons - don't hardly kick at all compared to modern guns.

They are so darned big and heavy that the kick gets soaked right up.

I've never busted a knuckle, or even skinned my finger from shootin' a BP revolver.

However - watch out for the very sharp edges on the Pietta cyinders when you're fondling them while watching an Eastwood movie. :)

Dragoon style trigger guards on my Walker, Dragoons and Super Blackhawk are fine. On my 51 Navy it's to small for my finger. I'm finishing a brass dragoon frame for my ROA.

Sam Colt used square backed triggerguards because the chief of Army Ordnance liked them. When that officer was gone, Colt immediately changed his guns to round triggerguards.

As someone mentioned, the squareback is painful in a heavy recoiling gun, as in Ruger Super Blackhawk. The Dragoon, even with a full load, doesn't kick hard enough to be a problem.

how much longer till pics? did you make or customize? show progress pics !!! (never shot a dragoon, lots of rugers with them, no problem) :D

I have rather large hands, and these trigger guards can hurt me if I am not careful. Too bad, as I really like the way they look.

I have very large hands. The square back of a SBH trigger guard contacts my middle finger when held in a normal grip. I suspect that there would be even less clearance with the smaller grips of a Dragoon. Ouch!

Maybe a Walker would be better... .

I shoot my '47 pretty regular and have shot my 1st Model a few times and back before I moved over to primitive firearms I shot a Ruger .44 Magnum now and again. The square backed trigger guards have never given me any problems. In addition I like the way they look..Just me..Great White Hunter..

I prefer square back. I like the look better, and on the navy I think it's more comfortable.

It's a raw frame that requires all screw holes to be located, then fit to the frame and polished. I well take some photo's as work progresses. I have the frame and I know what gun it's going on, that's as far as I have gotten so far.

I think the brass well look good with a stainless ROA and Rosewood grips.

I have a 2nd mod Dragoon and large hands. No problems at all. I also like the looks of the square back better than the rounded one.

In black powder the square trigger guard is not bad at all. Out of a 357 maximum it can smart a bit on hot loads.
