I have a Pietta "Confederate" Colt Navy and was wondering if it worth to get a second cylinder and have it loaded (no caps though) to save time.

Thoughts?

I have an extra for one of my pistols (wish I'd bought more). Its handy, but not necessary. Having good powder flask that throws the charge you want keeps things moving pretty well.

To each his own but I've put north of a thousand rounds through one of these and I just don't see the benefit. It's not like you're in a hurry when you shoot it. Part of the experience of these things is the loading in the first place. I have timed my loading though and usually can have one back on target in less than three minutes. Keep in mind that I've got a lot of practice stuffing them.

One thing that you can do is roll your own paper cartridges. Time wise, it's a wash in total but it saves you from having to lug a bunch of stuff to the range. Loading a Black Powder 1851 Navy with Paper Cartridges Video

Far as range shooting goes, get a good bullet press like this one. It's on my list. I have a cheaper traditions one. These things really speed load time.

I have a couple of spare cylinders for my colt Navy, they were cheap, and after Christmas I plan to order a couple for my new Pietta Remmy. I really don't know why I want 'em, just do. Figure to carry them in my speedloader pouch in the field should I need a fresh charge while hunting small game or something. Probably never will. Just something I want, spare cylinders. :D

Hell, for the Remmy they're only 50 bucks a piece. Why not?

You still have to load the extra cylinders... :D

Changing a cylinder in a Remington is a far simpler task than in a Colt, and can be done with no tools, mallet or pockets or table tops to put your loose barrel while you're changing the cylinders. I know some people do it, though. Personally, I'm not crazy about constantly taking the barrel off.

To each their own. I've been shooting C&B revolvers since the mid 70s and never saw the need for extra cylinders. Fumbling with a loaded cylinder outside the gun never had much appeal to me. If I ever thought that was a significant issue, I'd just load a second gun. I do have a brace of Navies loaded at the house.

+1. I shoot CAS matches and can recharge both pistols in 3-5 minutes. Changing cylinders would not save an appreciable amount of time during a match - and would add time to the cleaning process.

Arbor pin

I hope my arbor pin dont come out with a press of the thumb. I had that happen one time shooting and lost the barrel. Now the wedge that might be a differnt story if it was thumb tight, but still I like to tap it with something just to keep everything tight.

Using a cylinder loading press could make it more enjoyable to be able to fire off all 12 shots from the 2 cylinders without reloading.
By loading off the frame, there wouldn't be a need to take the extra cylinder back off after loading it.
IMO it's more fun to be able to fire off 12 shots without reloading instead of only 6, as long as one isn't bothered by removing the barrel key.
But the question is how much money does a person want to spend to be able to do that with the least amount of fuss? :)

An inexpensive Traditions loading press is listed in the thread below along with other useful items (free shipping with $25 order):

And Dixie offers another press:

I doubt anyone has ever regretted having and extra cylinder or two for their revolver. Life is short- if you think you want one, get it.

If a finger snug wedge is wrong, I don't wanna be right. ;)

As long as it fits snugly and stays in place, I don't see the problem. And with a finger-tight wedge, cylinder swaps are reasonably quick.

I wouldn't let that stop you if you want a spare cylinder.

On the other hand, it would be nearly as cheap to buy a second revolver, and never need to swap the cylinders. Especially if you are talking about the brass framed guns.

As the other guys mentioned, a separate loader would probably be the best way to take advantage of having two or more cylinders for the same gun.

I have 3 spare cylinders for my ROA and also have an extra ROA and with my son loading with the press while I shoot and I loading for him, we can easily go through a pound of powder and many balls in an afternoon of shooting.

I dont see the advantage unless its run like a crew served weapon. Extra cylinder get one in .45 colt.

Barrel wedge, sorry. It presses out under thumb pressure, spring keeps it in place. that's the way it's SUPPOSED to work. If you have to whack it out with a 10 lb sledge (or anything), it's not properly fit.

The press is the best way to speed up reloading. I have spare cylinders just because I wanted spare cylinders and it's my money to spend as I want. :D I don't take 'em to the range loaded, though.

Someone posted a Youtube link of an Aussie doing the cylinder swap/fire thing with a Remmy a while back. He was just letting the empty cylinders drop in the dirt. Guess that's okay, but makes me cringe. OH the HORROR! :D
