I have my grandfathers gun, a Remington 742 in 30-06, in my possession and the extractor port cover is broken. After firing a round it cracked in half and the gun was stuck in the open position. I finally got it to close, but now I have to replace that plastic cover. I bought a replace, but I am not exactly sure how it goes in. Do I just take the gun apart and slide the piece in and reassemble, is it that easy? Or is there some type of trick to it. Or is it a repair that I should let a gun smith handle?

Unless your'e real handy ,it's a chore. forearm & barrel come off (barrel requires special wrench). trigger assy. is removed ,then bolt handle pin is driven out, bolt removed toward front .Then you can clean & install new port cover. You might want to farm this job out. jim
