Will 115's work in a 1-8? From what I have seen a 1-7 is recommended for 115's. I have a 6mm AI and the throat is showing much wear at 800 rounds but it still shoots good. I get about 3100 fps with 105 Amax's using H1000. I FF ammo using the COW method. Should I get another 6mm it will be a 6mm Creedmore.
"....I got a GREAT DEAL on it, you would be proud of me for how much I saved.......hey, what's for dinner......oh, and did I tell you how beautiful you look today?....."
This gets into what actually works and what should work.
At one time I had a 10 twist .22-.250 and knowing nothing about twist rate and bullet length I bought 3 boxes of 68 grain Hornady .224 match bullets and loaded them with H4350. They shot just great, even up to targets 1/2 section distance or 880 yards. Later, upon reading about the Miller twist rate program I measured 68's lengths and learned/informed that the 68's would not work in a 10 twist because the SG value was 1.12. I continued to shoot 68's in the 10 twist then I re-barreled to a 1-9 twist and was able to shoot one hole groups at 100 with the 68's despite having a SG value or 1.38 for the 10 twist, some what less than the 1.40 recommended. I also have a 9 twist 6.5-.308 that should be marginal with 140 VLD's but shoots well at 1000. Saying this, upon buying up 500, 600 or 1000 bullets I would actually measure the twist rate of my rifle and only buy one box of 100 for testing. Going off from the subject, I like 9 twist .22-.250's because they shoot 68, 69, & 70's but also do very well with the 53 Hornady VMax.
The Berger twist program gives a SG of 1.28 - 1.29 for the 6mm VLD 115 @ 3000 and calls that marginal but if they group well at long range.... Other 115 bullets might be somewhat shorter.
