What is a reasonable price for once fired, uncleaned, primer still in, .308 Win,30.06 and 30-30-Win brass?

I am just getting into reloading and was wondering what to offer for it.

Thanks.

Good question. I sold a bunch of brass on eBay before they changed their policy. It was pretty competitive and I would try and list the starting price less than the other guys. Since most of the brass sales have moved to GunBroker and Auction Arms, I've noticed that some sellers want almost as much for once-fired stuff as new brass. Current prices for retail is not helping.

I usually start my auctions at one third of whatever retail might be for the same brass at Midway. It seems to work, since all the stuff I've listed has sold. And I do not overcharge for shipping like some. I make good use of those flat rate boxes and envelopes from the post office. UPS or FedEx is not the best way to go for brass in most cases.

I've also sold brass on ebay before they stopped it. I buy my brass at a nickel a pound over the going scrap price for yellow brass, which last week was $1.95 a pound in Eugene, OR. That means I paid $2.00 a pound for what I bought from the local range, but that includes a whole bunch of .22 brass, loaded rounds, some steel and aluminum cases, and everything is mixed together, along with some debris. I spend several hours separating all the different calibers, and sorting out what can't be reloaded.

The reason I'm telling you this is so you can get an idea of what the brass is worth. At the very least, it's worth scrap price ($1.95 a pound). And at the most, it's worth the labor it took to sort it out and separate all the junk from it, and the convenience of you not having to do it.

From there you should be able to figure out what a fair price is. I can tell you that the old days of buying brass for $20.00 a thousand are long gone, though.

Hope this helps.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the old adage of "it's only worth what you are willing to pay for it" is very accurate. I have recently purchased .223, 30-30, 308 and 30.06. I have paid anywhere from .11 per piece to .20 per piece. It depends on how much, whether it is military or commercial, deprimed and cleaned, or range brass and dirty. If you look in the buy sell and trade section here, you'll see the extremes.

Watch it awhile and you will get the drift of it. There are some people on here who sell very good quality brass. If you look in the rate retail transactions forum you can quickly get a gauge of who is who. Find one name that pops up frequently and search in that forum for what they offer and what their rating is.

I won't mention any names here since it would be my bias, not your research.

Depending on caliber, and military or not, cleaned or not...

I sold 650 30-06 military cases unprocessed, uncleaned for ten cents each shipped.

I sold 250 commercial 30-06 cases, cleaned, in the original plastic sleeves and remington boxes, for twelve cents each plus shipping.

.308 is going for twelve to fifteen cents per round which is IMHO high, ten cents per round should be OK but with no more cheap surplus...not much reloadable .308 out there right now.

30-30 goes for eight to ten cents a round shipped.

Obviously the more you buy the better the price is since most brass buys will ship by the USPS flat-rate box full.

Best thing to do is figure out the cases-per-pound, and figure $2 a pound plus shipping, and adjust based on market price.
