Never fails. They've always got to act up when you've got company over, hey?

I took a friend shooting today, let him try my .45s, my revolver, my FAL, and my shotgun. The FAL gave me problems early on.

First of all, from my experience: Stay away from the alloy magazines. That's two now that have given me problems that I don't have with the steel ones.

Secondly, I once again had the failure to extract. Cranking the gas system down to 3 aleviated this. Normally the weapon ran fine on 5.5. After I adjusted it to 3, I rapid-fired several magazines in a function-check; no problems.

The cause of the problems?

South African ammo, my guess. DSA told me that it can be problematic, and in my experience it is. I had to adjust the gas system to get it to cycle the first time, and I've had to adjust it again, meaning that even different lots of the ammo are inconsistent. I'm almost tempted to turn the gas all the way down and let the thing run like an AK; overpowered gas system. (See, the FAL's adjustable gas system allows you only to use the minimum amount of gas necessary to cycle the action reliably; if you get underpowered ammunition, as I'm guessing the SA is, you're not getting enough pressure at that gas setting and need to adjust it. Remember, the FAL's gas system can't accomodate underpowered ammunition. If it doesn't work on 1 or 2 it's just not going to cycle in a FAL.)

I didn't have a single problem in probably 1,500+ rounds of Portugese surplus, but I've had plenty of grief from the South African stuff (comes in the 140 round battle packs). I've heard that the SA stuff isn't actually surplus, and DSA says it's not the best (maybe that's why it's so cheap).

In any case, it's just my luck that I'd buy 1,400 rounds of spotty ammo. I'm going to burn as much of it off and will stick to better stuff in future (Portugese is good, Australian has gotten a lot of praise. Stay away from Indian stuff and Cavim, I'm told).

Anyway, after I got those hiccups ironed out, he loved firing the FAL off of the bipod. The recoil isn't bad and he was enjoying himself.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I have an SAR-48 (Imbel) FAL and have shot a couple hundred rounds of SA through it without a hitch. As with any "surplus" type ammo, quality can vary depending on how it was stored prior to you getting it. I just use my stock for range blasting and not for any serious shooting even though it has shown to be quite accurate.

I have heard that the DSA chambers may be a little tighter than other FALs and perhaps this may be the issue with yours?

Good luck and happy FALing?

I noticed that when I popped open my stash of SA it shot to a lower POI than the Aussie stuff I'd zeroed my Cetme with, it also only threw the brass about 8-10 feet as opposed to the rocket launcher trajectory the Aussie stuff went out on. To me that would indicate that it wasn't loaded quite as hot as the Aussie.
I have some Port that I'm taking to the range tomorrow to play with, we'll see how it shoots.

I suppose I could just leave it on 3. Using "too much" pressure to cycle higher-powered ammo isn't going to hurt the rifle, and I've got a buffer in there in any case.

Not buying anymore alloy magazines, though. They feel flimsy.

Every other person I know that has the DSA STG58 that you and I have has their FAL set on 3.

You aren't using too much power if that's what it runs on.

Hmm. I had thought I'd read over at the FAL files that 5.5 was normal. *shrug*

Whatever. Rifle ran fine after adjusting it to 3.

Let me get this straight, though: lowering the number on the gas port actually is closing it, constricting the gas flow and making the pressure higher, correct?

After setting my FAL up for Port, I had to crank it down a setting or two to be reliable with SA. I'm not buying any more of the SA.

I asked the same thing over at FAL files a few years ago and 3 was the magic number.

I only shoot Portugese and Match ammo threw my FAL. Soon I'll be shooting the 155gr Palma bullets.

Probably. It's the only South African stuff I know of. It's cheaper than the Australian or Portugese, and has less oomph to it.

I don't know that it's military surplus. It comes in 140 round battlepacks, but I've heard it's some kind of commercial production. I don't have any handy to get the headstamp, though.

Nightcrawler,

I've shot the SA ammo through my DSA STG-58 Carbine and had to open the gas up, too.

What's funny, is it functioned fine out of an M1A Bush model.

Steve

I've been shooting Aussie F4 exlusively through my CAI "R1A1" (it's the same batch as the ones with the new barrels & furniture currently being sold at AIM for $529).

I also use a "3" setting. I've notiched it up to 4 and 5 on occasion, but this will inevitably lead to a FTF within 20 rounds. :scrutiny:

I had problems with SA ammo; I couldn't get it to extract at any setting. Anyway, I polished the chamber with 600 grit paper and the problems went away. I believe that the SA brass is softer than it should be (it's not NATO spec).

Portuguese, British, Spanish, U.S. GI and other ammo has always worked fine.

Jim

By the way, what are the markings on the crates of the SA ammo? Also, what is the headstamp?

Steve
