OK here it is. I'll give this match thing one more shot.

Fall 2008 MILSURP paper plate shoot

This match pits military surplus rifles from various nations and shooters against each other for top dog bragging rights, in a smallest group takes all format. This match will run until Halloween, that gives ya'll 2 months to participate.

THE RULES

Rifles

Rifles used MUST be military surplus firearms and not merely military style rifles, IE each individual rifle must have been owned by a military in the past.

Sights

Targets must be shot using Issue sights ONLY. no scopes or optics

Targets

Your target must be shot on a Paper Plate :D any brand or color will do. You may add a dot or color in an aiming point on your plate. Targets shot on anything other than a paper plate will be disqualified.

Scoring and Shooting

You will shoot a 5 shot group on your target at a range of 100yds measure the group size, make note of it on the plate with other information about the firearm used, date ect. Then take a pic of it and post it on this thread.
-Shooters may submit only one target per RIFLE. You may indeed submit more than one target but they must all be shot using a different gun

The smallest 5 shot group wins

if we get enough submissions I might average group sizes together by manufacturer and we'll see what countries milsurps are on average most accurate

Sounds like a lot of fun I will take some paper plates with me to the range and the will become victims of my m44 mosin

Don't expect to win but hope to give those pesky 91/30 guys a run for their money

It might be cool to give props in best in each era

Krochus, this is a great idea! I will bee sending groups from my Garand and German K98k in for sure.

Hey, I'm in. And my M1917 too. It used to be a shooter but I haven't tried it in years. If you don't hear any more from me it's because my group would not fit on a paper plate.

ETA: Mini range report: I can promise at least one entry for this contest. But I'm not ready to commit just yet. First 2 groups at 100 were 4 shots in an inch or less...plus one heartbreaking flyer in each. I'll keep trying some more but I did get one usable group about the size I expected. As the barrel heated, the groups became more evenly dispersed.

I took a scoped Mk X Mauser along to spot with and give the M1917 some cool down time.. The 1917 actually outshot the Mauser. The 1917 is heavier yet less pleasant to shoot than the Mk X. Neither trigger is very nice. Seems funny to compare the two.

I'll keep trying and hopefully get rid of those flyers. If not, I'll still have a decent entry.

oh yeah this will be cool!

now what to use hmmm.....Garand,M1903a3,Swiss 1911,Swedish M96,Persian mauser........hmmmm:cool:

Now I rally can't wait for my Indian Enfield No.1 MK III to show up. Also gives me a good reason to buy a whole lot of ammo for it and my 91/30. :)

shooting position?

do we need to shoot with a sling or off a bench or however we like?

time to get the k31 out :) I'll back that up with an M1 ;)

Now i've gotta go buy a milsurp so I can do this.

Oh well, i've been meaning to finally get a mosin. Then I can blame my bad groups on it.

mavracer, that looks like a foam plate, not paper. :p (;)) Nice shooting. I can hardly even see a paper plate at 100 yards, but I'll give it a try on my next range trip. If I can hit paper, I'll report back... :neener:

Does the rifle have to be orginal barrel and caliber?

For example my Vz 24 was orginally 8x57 but for legal reasons was rebored to 8x60?
So would this be allowed?
What about rifles that have been rebarreled from say 8mm to 7mm-08?

the rules only stipulate ISSUE sights and the rifle being a milsurp. I feel the sight rule goes a long way in keeping out rifles that have been too heavily worked over

What about rifles that have been rebarreled from say 8mm to 7mm-08?

they most likely wouldn't have issue sights any longer, but if they did they would qualify

For example my Vz 24 was orginally 8x57 but for legal reasons was rebored to 8x60?

again issue sights and you're good

I'm not trying to be a butthead, I just want to clarify as much as possible for other people interested in participating

Uh, what about parts guns that had to have a new receiver?

You know, the CAI FALs & CETMEs and other US civvie-legal without a Full-Auto stamp battle rifles and whatnot?

Grump I think that would fall under a "military style" rifle, but let the mods determine that.Honestly a milsurp rebored to a civilian caliber shouldn't be considered a "milsurp" anymore in my opinion either but...........

I go by the same definition of what's a rifle the ATF does, the SN#'ed receiver. If the receiver wasn't owned by a military then it isn't considered a milsurp for this match

hey Krochus,
just use a simple spirit of the game rule.it's the internet and there's no prise other than braging rights.hey they want to beat up on my 66 year old man with what ever go ahead but not much to brag about.
Just so you know I didn't use the former undisputed heavy weight champ (M1 Garand) because while it conforms to your rules I didn't feal the Wilson match Bbl was fair.

I will be posting four this weekend if the weather holds out.
1. K98
2. K31
3. 1903A3
4. 91/30
All will be shot with Milsurp ammo too.
